ST. Paul Ice Fishing Expo

Northlander

Recommended Posts

I plan on going this year. I skipped last year, I was short on cash and $25 bucks to park and get through the door was a little steep. It would be nice if they didnt gouge everyone.

If you're not buying anything big, you can park for free anywhere down W. 7th St and catch a bus for only a buck or two.

Figured you would be working the show this year Harveylee. Was gonna stop by and give you some Cr*p. grin

Northlander, If I make it (planning to) I will stop by and say hi. Never had a chance to make it to duluth this summer. Hopefully next year if you will still have a couple seats available for us. Maybe even on the ice this winter.

Went last year. Bought a few small lures, but that's all. I had my heart set on a hub-style house, but everything was sold out (at least what I wanted). I always hear about the great deals that can be found there, but I must have missed the boat. I think I'll skip this year, and save my money for the end-of-the-season sales at the local outdoors stores.

You can find some decent deals. But its not like theyre giving the stuff away (like they do at the end of the season).

I go to get excited for the ice season, to see what is new, and to rub shoulders with fellow ice anglers. It is a great time, and well worth it for me. Of course, I live right in St. Paul and I dont know if I would drive a significant distance to go.

Last year was my first time and I got a killer deal on a Honda EU2000. Next to that the Milaca Unclaimed Freight had some great deals on house equipment. Strikemaster also had some nice outerwear (long sleeve tee's, etc.) at great prices. They were also giving away free shots of brandy (I think it was Christian Brothers). This was my first year with a wheelhouse and this event was a great start to getting it outfitted the way I wanted to w/o waiting till the end of the season to save a few bucks. Thinking back the brandy shots must have gotten me in a shopping mood because I don't usually spend money unless totally necessary. Everything I needed under one roof made it a great event. Talking with fellow icefisherman I also got some good ideas on what to purchase and what not to.

I will agree that there numerous great deals to be had at the ice expo. Last year I got a great deal on a Ice35 flasher... I got it for $40 less than I would have got it at any of the big retailers if I bought it from the store... It is also great to get out and see all the new latests gadgets and gizmos related to ice fishing. I also enjoy the seminars if you have time to sit in on some of them. There are also always booths where guys are displaying the newest lures. Last year the Lindy booth had a tank and a guy was showing how to properly jig the darters. If you are looking to make a big purchase for this coming ice season (i.e. a flasher, auger, ice house, ice suit, etc), I would highly recommend checking out the all the deals to be had at the ice show!

If you don't want to pay for parking, I'd park on the outskirts of downtown and either walk or take a bus there.

I'm in the market for some new boots and bibs... Not sure if I can wait until December though...especially the boots. Probably not a ton of great deals on items like boots anyways eh? I remember seeing the bunny boots there last year but not sure if I want something that bulky or not.

tsande00-i can't remember if i saw any boots at the expo last year. one word of advice: BAFFIN! i bought a new pair of baffin impact books last year and they are absolutely amazing! waterproof and rated up to -150 degrees! needless to say, my feet havent been cold ever since. also, they are extremely light... it feels like i am walking on air!

i believe i bought my boots last fall on sale at gander. i will say with boots, they are all that separates you from the ice, and you get what you pay for! and there is no worse feeling than cold feet when out on the ice! im sure there are many other great boots out on the market, but i highly recommend you checking them out at trying them on!

I will definitely do that. My current pair is at least 5 years old (Wolverine Gore Tex, 800 gram). They WERE fantastic boots that were only $80 or so, but they are no longer waterproof. In fact, they are absolutely terrible...I think that goretex is only waterproof for so long. They started to leak a little two years ago, but last year it was a complete joke...even a little snow would melt once I fired up the heater and I would be sitting there with wet feet. I'm sick of it.

I've heard good things about the Baffins...I'll definitely check into them, price tag is a bit of a turn off, but then again, you usually get what you pay for.

yes, it also depends what you use them for... if you are the type of the guy who only fishes out of a portable or perm, you can get away with mediocre boots.however, if your like me and drill a ton of holes when you are out on the ice and spend a lot of time hole hoping with just your rod and flasher, your going to want a good pair of boots for the walking, as well as to stay dry (pulling the auger out of the hole can sometimes soak your feet=not a problem with good boots)... like i said, if your going to be fishing in a portable or perm all the time, i wouldnt bother spending $150 on boots and id spend it on something else.

Those boot are great. I spend a lot of time outside for work during the winter. I managed to talk them into the Baffin boots and a set of the Black AA for everyone. They definately made my ice fishing more enjoyable!! Now if I could only find an angle for getting a new insulated hub style pop up I would have everything covered.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
