Scent question --

Recommended Posts

We hunt on land that is a long way from where we live. Every year then night before opening Deer I drive the wheeler around and put up scent. I use latex gloves and rubber boots.

The deer are used to wheelers and other activitiy because of farming.

Is it worth adding scents the night before? Now much is too much? I always have some with me in my stand as well.

Am I wasting my time by just putting it up the day before?

Any and all answers or experiences would be appreciated.

i like useing scent and i have confidence in it as do you, But i would put it out in the morning as you go to your stand. i stay out of were im goin to hunt until the morning of. i also like a scent drag as i go to the stand. Dont use alot as we know deer can smell so i go with about a half inch on a scent wick iv had better results with less. GoodLuck

As stated above, I always put my scent out the morning of the hunt. My feelings are that if you leave the scent hanging to long, the deer become rather accustomed to it. If they do check it out that night, and nothing is around, why would they come back? Don't know if this is the right line of thinking, but its the only one I have!

I also make sure to hang my scent wicks in kind of a semi circle around my stand area, down wind from the stand. (1) it pushes the scent out farther and (2) it helps to mask your scent a little. The drag rag is a good way to help cover up your scent from walking into your stand and lure the deer into your shooting area.

I place my mock scrapes out a week in advance and have had good luck...sometimes two weeks in advance as I hunt a far ways from home and wknds are limited. I hunt public land and these areas get hit hard all fall from grouse hunters. I wear rubber boots too but at least in my area, I feel confident that the human scent has walked around my deer stand for the last few months!

To me hanging scent wicks vs. scent drippers over mock scrapes are completely different. I wouldn't hang wicks ahead of time, I don't even leave them out when I leave a stand normally, unless I forget which occasionally happens.

Why attract them to your stand when you're not there? The mock scrapes you would want to establish ahead of time to get them to using a trail or a field or whatever, but they kind of keep working on their own from that point.
