quick question

Recommended Posts

The rules totally depend on where you are hunting and the classification of that zone ie. lottery, managed, intensive.

You are allowed to buy one archery license and one firearms license per year. However, you are only allowed to take one buck a year, period. If you shoot a doe, then it depends on what your zone is.

If you are lottery, then you tagged your one deer for that zone and you are no longer allowed to hunt that zone with any weapon.

If it was a managed zone, then you may buy a gun license and hunt that zone again and take one more deer of either sex. You may alson continue to hunt that zone with your bow if you purchase a bonus tag, but you are limited to antlerless only since you used your either-sex bow tag on a doe.

Intensive is the same as managed except you can buy more bonus tags to hunt up to 5 deer total.

You may also buy bonus tags and continue to hunt in other managed and intensive zones in the state.

Powerstroke is on, please let us know what your area is designated, (lotter, Managed, or Intensive) and get back to us. You are asking a very simple question, but without knowing what your area is, the answer might not seem so simple.

Here the shifty part if you want to get two deer in a management or Intensive harvest area and one is a buck you can't put a buck on a bonus tag. So your forced to buy a bonus tag right away, Incase your second deer is a buck. Good way for the DNR to get those bonus tags purchased I guess.

I'd have to check on that, I know that you used to be able to take either sex with the bow in a lottery area, but am not sure if that has changed.

Quote:
Regular archery license – A regular archery license is valid for an

either-sex deer statewide in any open area, except 234, 237, 282, 284,

286, 288, which are buck only. Closed areas and season dates are listed

on page 92.

Yes, you can still tag either sex with the archery license.

I have had questions on this subject as well. I rifle & muzzle-load hunt in a Managed area. Lets assume I shoot a doe during the rifle season.

If I want to be able to tag a buck during the muzzle-loader season, do I have to tag my doe during the rifle season with a purchased bonus tag?

I have always been under the assumption that once you use your either sex tag, you are no longer allowed a buck? Is this correct?

Quote:
yes - it is either sex in the lottery area i am hunting. Is this new this year? i always thought in the past you couldn't account for seperate areas seperately. Making the max that i could tag between the two areas was 2 deer.

Trav, think of deer hunting in terms of bag limits. You do not need to compound the deer for the area. Meaning, if you shoot a doe with your bow in a lottery zone, you CAN still shoot two more deer in a managed zone. However, once you take your 1 deer from a lottery zone, you are done in lottery zones throughout the state. In addition, if you would then shoot two deer in the managed area, you would done in managed areas throughout the state, and would then need to find an intensive harvest area to be able to hunt more deer.

5 deer statewide max, any combination of seasons, any combination of areas. Only one legal buck/person.

Wow, I didnt realize that you could add areas together this year. (shoot one in my lottery area at home AND go to our farm in a managed area and shoot 2 up there)

Not that I want 3 deer, but I had no idea that changed.

I wonder what else I missed..... smile

Geez.

It was that way last year, this might even be year 3, but I am not sure. Last year I hunted all three areas, lottery, managed, and intensive. You have to know what you are shooting and how to register it. Once you get it down, its much simpler than the old regs, and you don't have to keep buying the bonus tags to save your either sex tag for the next season.

From one of of Archery snipers previous posts, it does a great job of explaining bag limits.

Quote:
Bag Limits

Bag limits can be confusing if you move around a lot and take deer in more than one area. However, the licensing system is designed to provide for maximum flexibility and allows people to travel and hunt statewide. The trade-off for this flexibility is time spent learning how many deer you can take in an area. The licensing structure is designed to allow for the over-harvest of deer in local areas and it is the hunter’s responsibility to know the bag limit for the areas they hunt. The alternative to flexibility is to limit the number and type of licenses a person can buy, which is the opposite of what hunters have requested. Below is a general explanation of statewide bag limits and what you can and cannot do.

• Only one buck is allowed per calendar year, without exception.

• Although you can buy 3 licenses, the bag limits for individual areas may not allow you to fill all 3 licenses.

• Most Minnesota deer hunters only tag 1 deer. In 2009 individual hunters tagged:

o 1 deer – 86%

o 2 deer – 12%

o 3 deer – 1.5%

o 4 deer – 0.4%

o 5 deer – 0.1%

• The total allowable bag limit for youth antlerless, lottery, managed, and intensive areas is 5 deer.

• Deer area limits are as follows:

o Youth Only Antlerless – 1 buck for adults, 1 either-sex deer for youth who are successful in the lottery. Unsuccessful youth or those who don’t apply are limited to one buck

o Lottery – 1 deer per year in 1 lottery area.

o Managed – 2 deer per year, using any combination of licenses and permits.

o Intensive – 5 deer per year, using any combination of licenses and permits.

o Early Antlerless – 2 extra antlerless deer during this season.

o Metro and Bovine TB – unlimited number of antlerless deer.

• You can mix and match seasons, areas, and permit types to reach fill your tags.

• Bonus permits are not allowed in any youth-only antlerless or lottery areas.

• Examples of what you CAN do:

o 1 lottery, 2 managed, 2 intensive = 5.

o 1 lottery, 1 managed, 3 intensive = 5.

o 1 managed, 4 intensive = 5.

o 5 intensive, 2 early antlerless = 7 (yes, you can do this).

• Examples of what you CAN’T do:

o 1 lottery, 1 youth only.

o 2 lottery.

o 2 youth only.

o 2 managed, 4 intensive = 6.

o 3 managed.

• Important points:

o You can only take 1 deer in any one lottery or youth antlerless area. In other words, you can’t kill deer in 2 different lottery or youth only areas.

o You can take up to 2 deer total in any 2 managed areas. In other words, you can’t kill 2 deer in 3+ different managed areas.

o You can take up to 5 deer in any of the intensive areas. Again, mix and match but don’t exceed the general limit.

Well I'll be hunting with a gun in zone 246 which is a lottery zone but I'll be hunting with a bow in a different lottery zone. So does that mean I can shoot a doe with my bow than I can shoot a buck with my gun in the other zone? That's how I understand the rule

Trigger are you saying that I can tag a doe in a lottery area and use my primary tag/either sex tag and still shoot a buck on a bonus tag in a management or IH area? Or can I use a bonus tag in a lottery area to shoot a doe and still have my buck tag for IH or Management areas?

MAN ALL THESE CHANGES ARE MAKING IT VERY DIFFICULT TO FIGURE OUT.

O.K. I just got the skinny on the whole thing from the dnr as it pertains to me. I mainly bowhunt. What I cannot do is tag a doe with my archery license in a lottery area and kill a buck anywhere in the state with my BOW. I can buy a rifle tag or ML tag and shoot a buck in a management or IH area.

Man how isn't there a lot of honest mistakes out there with this system. I am not saying that I have a better one but can we please keep it consistant.
