we are going to make a cooler in the back of the truck. basically it will be polystyrene insulation/plywood. Prolly a 6 foot by 4 foot by 1.5 foot box. we are gonna tip it by putting a 2X4 under the north and east sides and drill a hole in the southwest corner to let any water out. plop the quarters in there, fill it with ice and drive like crazy. worked well for us last time we did it.

Depending on the airline, if you go first class you get a few extra checked bags for no charge. The cost of checking the bags and flying coach is sometimes MORE than upgrading to first class with the same bags. Some guys in my dad's fishing club do this when they do an Alaska fishing trip.

50lb bag limit is also an issue to consider when checking them. Extra fees for going over.

Could also consider using plastic totes with dry ice and flash-frozen meat if possible. Should stay plenty cold for the trip I'd think.

I don't think you can put dry ice on a plane.

The baggage area of the planes is very cold due to the altitudes so if it is frozen, it should make the trip home frozen without any issues. I have brought frozen fish home from Florida and it was rock solid when we got home. If you can get the meat to a processor they will cut wrap and freeze it for you untill you are ready to head home. Then like others have said you can ship it or you can bring it home as extra bags. Check with the processor about shipping and the airline about the extra bags so you know costs upfront and that might help you with your choice. Good luck!
