how often do you retie?

Recommended Posts

I have read on here where some people dont like one line over another because they have lost a lure or a fish for no reason from line breaking. IMO most of the time this is from a bad spot in the line or just thinking a knot will last forever. So with that said how long do you let a knot work befor you retie it. or do you let a knot go until you find a bad spot in your line that needs to go

it's pretty easy IMO to see when your line is starting to fray or get fuzzy, one advantage of 100# test, usually check it after a fish and before trips and retie when in doubt. every so often strip off about 10 feet of line or so. if my leader comes in all snarned up in my line i'll check it too cause i use single strands with the sharper ends. luckily haven't ever had any line failure on a fish.

why am i still at work? if there was ever a day to skip it and go fishing this would have been it.

Not often enough......

Hahaha...EXACTLY what I was thinking to myself when I saw the topic title...

With superlines you do have to retie way less than you did with dacron (that was an every hour or so deal). But I still try to retie a couple times a day if I'm using the same combo all day. You can usually see line wear and fray pretty easily.

I had my line snap on the cast last week. The weird thing is that the break was 30' down the line from the leader. Maybe I got caught on a log or something I didn't see.

Luckily, there was enough line after the leader that was still floating so I could retrieve my shiny double-bladed wallet-buster.

That is weird. At what point in the cast did the line break? Just before release would be when there is the most tension on the line but at 30' back that part of the line should have been buried 20' onto the spool.

..and I like the "double bladed-wallet buster" I have lost a few of those.

To answer the original question: every time I go out.

It snapped in the middle of the cast just a few feet past the rod tip. I casted like normal and was pretty shocked when the reel went into a backlash (I rarely backlash with the 400TE, but the Abu's are a different story). Once I realized it wasn't a backlash and that my line had snapped, I noticed there was about a foot or two of loose line hanging off the tip of my rod.

When I retrieved the lure, I was shocked to find 5 arm lengths of line still attached to the leader.

Check your guides with a qtip for cracks etc.

I retie when I see a reason in terms of fraying or wear. I use a different style knot than most and it doesn't pressure the line in and around the knot in the same way as a traditional knot. I've had probably 6 different brands of line, I have yet to have one that doesn't get frayed. They all will get a weak spot with a bad enough backlash, then this spot will break next time. Even with the 100# rope lines.

Power pro has been by far and away my worst experience, big fan of cortland and suffix these days.

Now that you mention it, I took my brother out musky fishing for the first time a day or two prior to that happening. He'd never casted a baitcaster before that day. I gave him the Abu to use, which he promptly backlashed to kingdomcome on his first cast and while I was trying to untangle the gordian knot, I gave him my Calcutta to use, which he managed to backlash just as I was getting the other one untanled.

I will definitely check the line guides with a q-tip, though. That's a good habit.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
