bass fishing at night

I've been wanting to try some bassin' at night (it's a lot easier to talk the wifey into letting me out once the kids are in bed!) but I'm not sure how similar or different it is compared to daytime fishing. Similar presentations as during the day? Similar structure?

all depends on the lake

try fishing areas where you find success during the day.

i like upsizing baits and slowing down the presentation at night

favs are black/blue jig w/ trailer,

a black/blue 10" t-rigged power worm

large single colorado spinnerbait (black)

buzzbait

pretty much all i ever use at night.

This something that has always stumped me.. The few times I have gone out have been fruitless to say the least.. I had FAR FAR FAR more bug bites than fish bites.. One time I managed to nail a bug hatch so bad I could not even see my depth finder for all the bugs sitting on it. I would not make a very good catfisherman. Give me 5am-11am anytime!!!

Shallow water and loud top water baits.... I really like to fish buzz baits at night. Have over the years caught some of my biggest fish.... What is nice is the wind will die down many nights so top water is great.

Bug spray is essential on many nights especially when you are close to shore.

Goblue nailed it. Fish where you would during day time but size up baits.

Ive fished many tournements down south during the summer when its just to hot to fish during the day and alot less traffic on water. Its a ball, but can be mentally draining. You need to know where your going to fish before starting as its not the time to experiment.

I havent tried it in MN just because the bass fishing is so good during the day (no need to fish at night) and the dang misqutos are so bad here. One thing to stress, you think its hard to wait to set the hook when fishing topwater in the day, try it at night. Way worse. Untold fish not hooked because of over reacting at the sound. Blacklights work pretty good to see the bank, but i usually just turned all lights off ( i know not legal but everyone did it) Docks Docks Docks and youll catch bass at night.

Upsize lures and steady cadence cranking can make for a good recipe to catch them. I always start with top water type lures, then go with spinner baits or wake baits. Finally in line spinners. If you use an Erie Dearie type of trolling spinner and trail a soft plastic worm on it. It's a good way to get them. Steady pulling spinning blades does a great job at calling them in.

If you'll be using a jitterbug, no need to set the hook. grin

When I use a jitterbug at night, the bass seems more active. When they strike and miss, they'll strike again.

black jitterbug is a really great night time lure. My dad fished them way back in the 50's and 60's in Wisconsin and MN. Lure has been around for a long time!

He also fished big black hula poppers at night. The man caught a lot of big fish back then before the sophisticated electronics.
