jay83196
Let me ask you this would you do the bread or corn thing if you had enough pastry, candy, meat, peanuts, dog food to last season?
x1957x
Boar, did you and cherokee try that special recipe I told you to make? Its been known to work.------57-----
Boar
Ya know I've completely forgot about it, what was that again? I have some donuts in the fridge, waiting to be transfered to my staging tub. I'll try it. List the recipe again please, thanks boar
x1957x
BOAR--- you have to get a 35-50 gallon drum. Take bread and put in bottom about 1/4th of the way. take a 5 gal. bucket and put in 5.lbs of sugar (or so ), pour about 1/4 of that or myself i like to get it a little more damp then that. Us your judgement.Take some honey and put on top of that, Your judgement also. Keep layering it,appx. 4 layers and put a lid on it.DO NOT PUT IT ON TIGHT>--- as it will forment and IT WILL BLOW the top off. I usually just lay a 50 gall. garbage bag inside of the drum and at the end i just lay it loose on the top. Let it sit about a week and then put about a 5 gal bucket of the go on it and Holy Cow. LET the games begin..... Keep it moist with water on your final layer. I have a buddy that tyed it last year and he made bait boxes out of 2x12's and the fricken bears ate a hole threw it. He swears by it.... Any questions you can post it or e-mail me at ( [email protected] ) Let me know . -----57----
cherokee
I added some sugar, honey and frosting to the corn. Not sure how it will turn out but the sun is heating things up and the lid is bubbling up. Not sure how waterproof it will be but the corn should hold up.57 I kinda did something like you suggested. I popped a lid off of one last night and it was looking good. I used frosting instead of honey.Let the games begin is right.
Boar
Yep I'm ready to play. 57 layering with sugar an honey, got that, but do ya wanna dampen with water between the layers too? Boar
just_jig
Now that we all have quality bait the next question is how often do you all bait the site's? and is there a preferable time of day to bait a site?
Boar
TO start with, after opening baiting I wait two to three days an check an once hit everyday. Boar
x1957x
----boar--- Actually you mix5-6 lb's of sugar in the 5 gallon bucket of water and pour it on every layer . you will use the water 4 times and put 4 layers of bread - sweet rolls ect. in the drum to end after the 4th filling you will be to the top of barrel and out of sugar water. You use honey frequently every time after you add the water. do not put a ton of water on it. about 5-6 gallons on a 40 gallon drum. DONOT>>>> put the lid on tight,It ferments and does expand some. Just put a bag over the top of it while it ferments. It really works and it turns into a paste and is kinda water proof.----57----

Boar
Hey 57, Went to sams club to buy some honey an I knew it was expensive, so for half the price of a quart of honey, i opted for a gallon of Mrs. butterworths maple syrup, pretty sure I'll get the same end results with a sweet maple flavor. i'll keep ya posted. Thanks again for the recipie. Boar
bogwalker
I would be careful switching baits. If you are using something that works, stay with it. Bears can turn off to a bait like you flipped a switch.
Boar
Yep, thanks for the reminder bog, actually gonna start this concoction on a seperate site an keep it that way. I really feel that 57's brew is closley related to my greasy dougnut brew, The doughnuts pretty much have the same ingredients, sugars, water, been deep fried, lots of maple frosting, being stored in grease the sugars an grease merry an carmelize pretty much like 57's. I'll I just done up a 40 gal. barrell an will see what happens by next mid week, I dont mind starting a site a little late. Boar
bogwalker
That is right. I have some sights where there is no advantage baiting until a day or two before the opener. The best bait gets the bears.

Matt Breuer
People were mentioning oats and corn and molasses earlier. When you stop in at the grain elevator, don't let them hold out on you, ask them for the good mix. We can get bags here that are pre-mixed with oats, corn, sunflowers, molasses, even seen dried blueberries in a mixed bag. It's all tumbled with molasses, and the stuff rocks. The grease and bread thing works well, but grease is so dang messy. I can feel my wife kicking me in the rear starting today when I tread grease into the house. Ugh... another 6 weeks in the dog house, gotta love it boys! superbee
That grease sure is messy, I know the my wife just loves all the grease soaked stuff I bring into the house.
Boar
Hmm. never had a problem with it, but it seems that every year I donate a few pairs of shoes, paints, an shirts to the cause. boar
motley man
My truck bed still has grease on it from 15 years of hunting but no rust. A good set of light weight coveralls [ the kind mechanics wear ] and some good farmer gloves [ the yellow ones ] and don't forget the old pair of rubber boots. Wash coveralls after each use and they are fine. Boots get cleaned walking to and from bait site.
Boar
Ha, As I think about it, I guesse I've been acclimated to the constant grease smell an jsut dont realize the back of my suburban is waterproof. Boar
x1957x
Hey guys. how did baiting go? I found alot of rasberries up by Warba and a few closely to it within 15 miles or so. Checked baits before i left to go home today and 3 of the 5 were already smacked!!!! This was all with my special recipe. The first bait I used sweets and nothing hit it and the one I used dog food and sweets and deep fat fryer grease and again NO> and the other 3 the special recipe and deep fat fryer grease and liquid smoke. THey were opened up. -----57------.
