Okay, so normally I wouldn't post something this far off topic from "fishing" and "minnesota". But given that it is 2:14 in the morning and I am still awake, I'm going to have at it.

If you ever need to get your wisdom teeth out, I'm telling you right now it sucks BAD!

Not only is the pain enough to keep you up at night from the initial surgery...

Not only do dry sockets hurt like you can't imagine...

Not only do narcotics have a limit...

And, not only do you only get so many of them...

BUT - after all of THAT is over, you get stuck with the fact that your other teeth, which had pressure on them (which made it necessary to take out your wisdom teeth in the first place) now are going to move back into place, hurting the entire time.

The whole thing is nasty, in a big way. Plus, I'm nearly 30, and as such I do not heal well anymore and they are talking about doing a bone graft to fill in the shallow space in my jaw now where the teeth were and where my jawbone is very thin.

Why don't they tell you all of this BEFOREHAND!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????

I am going to have mine taken out in a few weeks. Thanks make me even more nervous. I have 5 to be taken out.

Can they put me down for about 5 days?

Hey, I feel for you buddy, but it isn't always so. I had all 4 of mine removed a few years back, at 35 or so, and had no problems, or pain, to speak of. One did bleed pretty bad for a couple of days, but even that wasn't as bad as I expected. You just never know with medical procedures...

I am glad I had all four of mine removed when I was 17. I went to an oral surgeon and was put under for the procedure.

One actually grew back when I was about thirty, about the size of a popcorn kernal. The dentist said there was just a little bit left after the surgery, and that it was not uncommon. He yanked it with a shot of novicane, no problem.

Look at it in the most positive way....

At least the pain you have now will be short lasting, and go away.

If you leave your wisdom teeth in and you dont have the room in your mouth it will cause alot of damage and could result in several teeth getting pulled, breaking, chipping, abscess, etc.

I had 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled all on seperate occasions .. the dentist wouldnt touch mine until it was a must ... they were fused to my jawbone. On another note, the pain of having them pulled was less than the abscess pain I was deaing with already.

Heal up, Go Fishing comfortably.

I had them removed back in 85'. They damaged a nerve in my jaw. The lower right half of my face still has no feeling. I litterally could pull a fish hook through my face and not feel it.

I understand where you are coming from, I only had one that needed to come out but it was laying down inbedded in my jaw. They were real concerned that they had to chisel out so much of the jaw to get to the tooth that I could easily have broken my jaw just by biting down too hard. The pain lasted for about 7-10 days and then everything was fine, hang in there.

Well, for another "it's not always bad" story....I had all four (two impacted) removed at the same time back when I was in my late teens and still went fishing the same afternoon. Of course, I'm also the guy who went ice fishing the day after getting snipped...

A couple more notes.

The day after I got them out I DID go fishing - it still hurt but the crappies were biting. I cleaned 8 that night!

I got that nerve damage thing too, but luckily I got the temporary variety. Part of my face was numb for a few days but then it got better.

Ouch! My wisdoms were a walk in the park. Just pray that later in life you never get eppididymitus or orchitus. That is a pain like no other pain. I had both three summers ago(one led to the other). My doc prescribed antibiotics and vicodan for the infection and pain. It reaaaallly is uncomfortable when you have a tennis ball in your drawers, if you know what I mean.

The horror. I had mine removed about 8 months ago and even had a fat steak on my way home. I am 32 and it went as smooth as silk. I have heard the horror stories and feel bad for you.

No braces, no retainer, all four wisdom teeth came in straight and perfect.

I really can't relate to your problem, but it sounded bad and I wanted to offer my condolences. As a reminder, drugs are good.

Had my w-teeth out many years ago with next to no problem but watch out for that dry socket infection those I will say, suck. Hope you feel better.

Yeah, I had the pleasure of getting a dry socket too...

Actually though, I have to be honest. I had hernia surgery twice (lucky me!) and if I had to pick which one of these things I would go back through, it's the wisdom teeth.

Hernia surgery is REALLY not fun.

Blackstarluver-eppididymitus-oh golly - that was bad. Wasn't at first, until the ER doc (female) said to wear lose or no skivs. I tried that for a couple of days and it got sooooo much worse. I went back and this ER doc (male) said tight supportive.

My wisdom teeth came out in '87 and it was okay until I got cocky and ate solid food too soon - infected socket - don't make that mistake. Keep slugging the Instant Breakfast and broth.
