Anyone tie there own jigs?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone else on here has expierimented with tying hair jigs at all? I was able to fish with HHguide this spring and he gave me some of the bucktail jigs he had tied up and they produced some giant eyes on a recent trip. So i have been tying my own bucktail jigs in the past couple weeks and its really addicting. I've tied from 1/32 crappie jigs up to 3/8 oz walleye jigs. I've tied up numerous color combos. My favorite is a 3 toned jig that mimics a firetiger pattern crank. Just looking for what some other people like as far as color goes and maybe any tips that anyone has.

I have started tying most my flu-flu style jigs for crappie fishing. I have tied some bucktails, but use more feather jigs. Are you using a fly tying vise, or a vise-grip? I'm thinking of all using gulp cut down as a add on plastic.

I tie quite a few different types for walleye & crappie. I did this bunch for some guys at work that were going to fish the Detroit river this spring.

These were tied with craft fur & 3/8oz. lead heads.

The craft fur is a lot more supple than the bucktail, as far as being easier to tie - I don't think there's a whole lotta difference. I wasn't with them, but I think they were tipping them with shiners.

Here is a few i've tied. I have no idea if a 3 tone will work any better than a 2 tone or a single color, but i figured i might as well try it.

nice work james. those are some sharp looking jigs you have tied there! i just started tying my own hair jigs about a month ago and i have been getting really good at it. i, like you, have been experimenting with two and three toned hair jigs as well, and i really like the flash they offer.

it is actually pretty easy to tie your own hair jigs and i have found the ones i tie to be much more durable then the ones you buy in a store.

Those things are awesome. Do you buy the jig heads painted like that or are you painting them yourselves? I am going to have to start learning how to do this. Where would I go to learn how to tie them? Is there a HSOforum or something that teaches you how to do it? I love using hair jigs.

Here is a "how-to" that I did a few years ago that will hopefully help someone...

Hey Dark i really like those "bullet" shaped jigheads, where do you get those? I checked your tutorial, i really like those stripes you added. You said thats just with a sharpie?

As far as learning how i actually watched a bunch of youtube videos.

...and for the jigs i've been using....i actually won a big set of jigs at a walleye seminar this spring made by a company called muscheye out of Wisconsin. I need to figure out how to get some more. They make some different colored and shaped jigs that i really like.

I tie quite a few of my own bucktails. Most are tied much sprser than you can buy in a store. They are really nothing fancy but there are few I like. I like the willowcat patterns, purples, blacks and greens mostly.

Tiger spripes can be added by using a marker. It never hurts to add a little flash to them either. You can always cut it off on the water if you don't want it.

James W - Yep, just a regular sharpie. It stays on prety well. But im quite sure it is more for our eyes than the fish. grin

By "bullet", do you mean the one in the top picture? They are a "ultra minnow" mold.

I have fished a ton of diff jigheads and prety much just use 3 or 4 diff types. You still cant go wrong with the plain Jane round head. Besides the round I like these three...

Top left one is a local custom mold that comes through the water real nice when snap-jigged. The bottom is called a "bullet". And the top right is a bananna mold, I like it for dragging bottom. But honestly if all I had was round jigs and fished em with confidence - i'd be fine. cool

More important to me is the hook. I prefer thin fine wire hooks and they dont need to be real big. Most of the time I tip bucktails with a half or 3rd of a crawler. Later fall/early winter on the river i'll tip with bigger minnows or two small minnows - then I dont mind a bigger hook...

BTW - the colors in the last pict are about all I fish anymore, maybe some white or a perch pattern also. I really like the yellows and olives, my dad uses almost only that brown and green one, sometimes the purlpe n black... Confidence and presentation trump color though, lol

You should be able to find those heads local or on the net. I have seen them that are similar called bananna, arky, or sparkie jigs. You'll see them on bass jigs but the hooks are way to heavy for me...

I dont mold my own but get them off evilBay, local, or friends.

Drop me a pm or e-mail and I can help out...

I thought i would resurrect this thread as I am spending a bunch of time tying on these cold weather weekends. Dark Cloud if you see this....what is your email? I'd like to get my hands on some of those banana head jigs.

I had a fun fall on pool 4 with my hair jigs. Caught some nice walleyes and some big crappies as well. I tied some for a co-worker who took them to the Rainy River/LOTW in late October and he really did well on Orange/Black up there. Last spring i caught a 30" eye on a hair jig that was given to me by fellow FMer, hhguide, and my goal this next spring is to duplicate that on one of my own hair jigs.
