Replacemment muffler/exaust for a 03'+ Dodge/Cummins???

Recommended Posts

Any of you guys have any recommendations on a replacement muffler/exhaust for a 2003 Dodge/Cummins? My muffler has rusted off on the front side of it....so I need to do something.

I called a shop in Forest Lake that my dad told me about and they said $400 to have a new muffler installed, not sure what muffler probably just a basic one that matches the stock setup.

Not looking to drop a lot of money on some high performance exhaust as I am all stock and I don't think I would see much increase in mileage from this.....but maybe others have some personal experience with their trucks?

Do you want a stocker or a larger system which make more noise ?

You can buy complete 4" exhaust kits on HSO-Classifieds for $ 350 shipped, otherwise look into a Donaldson muffler, they are sold in many places.

Your muffler has a 3.5" inlet and 4" outlet pipe.

Also if you call around many exhaust shops, they might have stock systems that will toss in garbage when people upgrade their exhaust.

Otherwise if you don't mint have a noisy exhaust with more flow, just "delete" your muffler with a straight tube.

my buddie did this on his dodge 2500 with a cummins in it, it sounds sweet and isnt horribly loud unless you floor it..

how can you legally delete the muffler? Does MN allow this? No way here in AZ, there is a guy here that has twin stacks on the front of the bed that are 6 inch. they come from a y pipe and he had to maintain the muffler to meet the emissions code. throw a jake on it and let it cackle

wow how lucky are you, every year, the dmv hits me for 30 bucks a car. then throw in the atv, bikes and everything else you can drop some bucks quickly. one more reason to move out of here. do you pay state income tax?

I have a 2001 with the Cummins, and my muffler did the same thing. I just had a shop replace it with pipe. It is slightly louder than stock, (Which was fairly loud anyway.) The resonater can is still on, and the turbo also muffles some of the noise. If you get on it, she'll bark pretty good.

My milage went up about .25 to .5 mpg as well. It seems to breathe a lot easier now.

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but if you want it "legal" put on a muffler. Most, (not all) cops will look the other way, but if they want something to tag you for, this will work, and its actually illegal to sell a vehicle without one.

I've had a hot rod of some sort for more than 30 years. I'm sure some will disagree but, in my opinion, a nice rumble through a good muffler sounds far better than the annoying sound of a bypassed muffler.

Minnesota Statutes 169.69 - Muffler

(Current as of: 2009)

Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order which blends the exhaust noise into the overall vehicle noise and is in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise, and no person shall use a muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a street or highway. The exhaust system shall not emit or produce a sharp popping or crackling sound. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with such parts and equipment so arranged and kept in such state of repair as to prevent carbon monoxide gas from entering the interior of the vehicle.

No person shall have for sale, sell or offer for sale or use on any motor vehicle any muffler that fails to comply with the specifications as required by the commissioner of public safety.

ooopsies.. my blazer has 18 inches of flex pipe from the cat going right out behind the passengers door, been stopped and have had it like that for a year with no troubles, one cop even commented on how nice it sounded.. smirk

Anyone know what the cat converter looks like on these trucks? I would assume the normal bulged section in the exhaust before the muffler? If so it must have been removed from the system on my truck, or may not have come with one which I think I read somewhere. Just curious....not gonna be buying one!

Ordered a Donaldson 51" muffler yesterday so it should be installed soon.

Your truck does not have a cat converter, the bulge before the muffler is just a resonator.

Let me know how's the Donaldson, I noticed small leak out of mine, looks like I'll be following your path soon.

Valv, there's no resonator either....just a strait pipe from the turbo. I was surprised, but I guess that's how it's supposed to be. I guess that explains the high pitch whistle I have now that the muffler is totally disconnected on the forward side of it!

I ordered the M090544, I'll let you know it is.
