for those with marine radios

I have a intermittent problem with transmission. Most the time it works fine but sometimes it will not transmit at all. The intended boats all have good line of reception but only a few will receive a signal, we also have limited reception sometimes, any ideas or suggestions

don't have a marine radio, but it sounds like an antenna connection problem to me. guessing you already checked connections. could you try a buddy's antenna?

The antenna connection or the antenna itself are the likely culprits, but the best way to know for sure is to do an SWR test on the radio and the antenna, if you have a tester or know anyone that does.

Sounds like you may have a antena that has a broken connection in it. What type are you running? At times they can just be re soldered.

When I got a new antenna they provided a PL-259 connector and in the instructions they said to solder the the tip and the braid to the respective barrels. Not easy to do because most solder guns don't get hot enough to heat up the barrels but I held it on long enough to get some solder into it for a positive connection. My antenna is a Shakespeare if that makes any difference.

Did you use flux or a solder with a flux core, If not the two metals won't bond toghther and could cause a problem in the connector.

I like to always use flux just to clean the metals no matter what type of solder I use. A lot less problems and you only have to do the job once.
