Weather radar in real time

Recommended Posts

I've been using WCCO weather HSOforum to view their radar, however it is not in real time. It is about 15 mins behind. When you have fast moving storms, 15 mins is way to long. A lot can happen in 15 mins to change things.

Is there a better radar site online (NOT talking about phone apps).

Weather channel is pretty decent IMO too. It always seems to be the most up to date. Lots of options to play with and you can even use their computer prediction model.

Otherwise the noaa site is OK too.

Access the noaa HSOforum, and then on the top left corner click on "go to standard version".

Click on look and then bookmark.

It works great on my netbook, not so great on my blackberry.

You can always go to MyCast as well, but that'll cost $20 for the app.

I bit the bullet and bought MyCast for my BB. The resolution is very good, and you get a bunch of other nice extras besides the radar too.

I think the radar is 10 minute intervals though.

Just my opinion, but 10-15 minutes is pleny of warning. It gets pretty obvious watching the animation to know exactly what is coming.

That's what it sounds like to me. The NOAA site is really nice but there's a lot of information that will go over most peoples heads. But both last Friday and Saturday the storm prediction center was dead on with it's severe outlook. If you are ever concerned about severe weather affecting an activity that's 6 hours to 2 days from happening, check out the storm prediction center outlook, as the weather channels "t-storm outlook" does a very poor job nailing down where severe weather is likely.

MyCast was developed by Paul Douglas and Russ Knuff (sp) formerly 'CCO fame.

It's basically a $20 application that reiterates the National Weather Services' forecast.

If you can get to www dot weather dot gov from your phone / computer, you have instant access, including up to the minute forecasts with their "short term forecast".

My Blackberry won't run the radar from the NWS HSOforum for some reason, so I run MyCast.

When I'm plowing, I need to know pretty much when the snow is going to stop and where, so I can direct guys to different areas of town.

Take a look at GRLevelX.

You can put this on your computer and set it up to get live data...I've briefly looked, and there are two or three different levels. Not sure if there are any charges involved, or what it takes to set it up.

When you go to the radar loop on the NWS mobile HSOforum, try hitting the 'z' button on your BB. I think that's what it was....

I'll try it, and see if it works.

Now I carry a netbook from Verizon in the truck, which is a much bigger display obviously, plus I can do paperwork and read all the posts on HSO easier. grin
