Do i need to buy a different transducer other then my ice ducer to use while i am fishing. We are doing a fly in trip in july, i think the boats only have a 9.9hp motor on them so we wont be going to fast. or can i just buy the suction cup thing i have seen for the ice ducer and stick that on the back of the boat.

any and all suggestions and help appreciated.

thank you

rob

I bought a clamp-on transducer "post, arm" that attaches to the back of the boat & it's adjustable for height. It is on a sort of swivel so it can bump a rock & kick up and not harm your ducer. It's easiest to attach your transducer with quick-ties, along with the cable onto the post.I don't recall where I bought this, but you should be able to find one. And yes, you can use your 'winter' transducer in the summer, been doing that for years.

Exactly what wolfman said. I have a similar clamp that pivots up that I put up when we were moving and then swing down when fishing. Basically a piece of metal conduit is the post/arm. All I did was electrical tape my transducer to the post. Worked sweet.

Otherwise in a pinch a piece of wood with a C clamp would work. Just won't be as easy to get the piece of wood totally vertical.

Put water in back of the boat and set transducer in water. It will read through hull just fine. What I do all summer...No different transducer or anything mounted on outside of boat. I also use a leech container from the bait shop and put a little water in it and set the ducer in it.Reads through container and hull fine. Save your money..

wow...great, simple idea hamms-scooter...I'm gonna try that leach container idea. It has never occurred to me that your transducer can read through all of that and still send back and accurate signal...wicked.

The biggest factor in getting a consistent reading with an ice-ducer in an improvised portable sump Vex-Mount, is keeping good contact with the hull.

Wetting the sump and adding a piece of felt under the ducer with a small bag of sand or lead shot on top keeps the ducer in place and insures a good transference of the sonar signal both ways.

Any voids or air will diminish the performance. Keep it wet, and keep it secure, and it will do well for you.

Your Gain adjustment will be a bit higher than on the ice. You may find it useful to run it in the LP Mode if your Vexilar FL unit is so equipped. For depths under 20', this is often well advised. Especially if your getting a lot of sonar clutter from suspended particulates or weeds in the water.

that is a really great idea hamms scoot!! very nifty to solve the problem of getting water under the ducer! ill have to try it out up in the bow of my boat. do you know if the part of the hull the ducer will be shooting thru has to be level with the water level?

I think that's why they are stating the back of the boat so that yes, the tranducer will be as level with the lake surface as possible. This is going to give you your most accurate reading of depth and what's under the boat.
