Fishing Line...for BIG bass!

Well not so much for BIG bass, but for decent bass that get down in the weeds and steal my expensive lures!

Wondering what most guys use...mono or braided? I am a mono guy, typically throw poppers, spinners...some plastics. Usually use 8 lb line, been losing fish lately...line pops when they get in the weeds (NO, it is not my knot). I am open to braided, just never used it, not sure what problems if any I would run in to.

Any suggestions? Guessing this topic has been posted a time or two, couldn't find it...

Thanks!

I have used 30 pound Power Pro for about the last 3 years and haven't broke off once. Why do people use 25 pound fluorocarbon and 65 pound braid in slop? Seems like a big difference in line strength to me.

Im a braid guy. 50-70 lb on Baitcasting rod for slop for sure. And 25 lb braid on spinning rod for docks (in case I get hung up I can break). Dont forget the rod, IMO its as important as the line for getting them out of the slop. Even with the rope i use,if i didnt have a stout rod Id loose alot of fish i get otherwise.

it all depends on the lure size. I JUST CAUGHT A pike today with 8 lb mono and it got me stuck in some weeds not too much just a handful wen i pulled the line loose from the weeds felt like my line was about to go. IF your lures feel a bit too heavy for the rod your using that means you need a heavyer rod with heavyer line. the problem is that your not explaining how much weeds exactly but all i can say is you needa work on landing fish take your time do not muscle them in i catch 2-3 pounders with 8 pound and i just let them tire out i spend about 1-3 mins to land decent fish and it works. as for braided line if your using spinning tackle for bass like a averege setup id suggest 15-20 pound braid but be sure that the guide on your rod can handle braid otherwise the braid will cut into them. if your using baitcast setups id suggest like 30-50 pound braid

It's Bass fishing...the bigger and more ridiculous the line the better! You never know when a 3 lb Bass might snap your 80 lb line!!!

:X

Fishing line isn't about fighting the fish. You can easily land a 50lb musky on 6lb test if you have enough bite protection in a leader and a well-set hook, and you're out in open water. It might take a while to play the fish, but it happens often enough.

If you use braid, there's no reason to go lighter than 30lb, the gain in lower diameter is pointless. I use 50-80lb braid so that when I hit a snag while shore-fishing, I don't lose 30 yards of line breaking it off, instead I can bend hooks out or snap off a lighter test 18'' leader.

Baitcaster or Spinning Reel?

When fishing for big bass in cover with a spinning rod, I've finally settled on 17lb test mono. I set the hook pretty hard to get it thru the plastic and get that bass's head turned up and out of cover, I need that stretch in the line that mono provides. I was snapping 12 lb and 14 lb to often on the hookset. As has been said, you need the rod to match the line, I just ordered a replacement rod for this type of fishing, I would have preferred one in the 10-20lb line rating range, but settled for 8-17. MH spinning rods are hard to find.

Half the time I'm fishing from a 35 lb canoe, on a nice fish and heavy hookset, I am pulled more towards the fish than it is to me by a longshot. I need all the advantage that a stout rod and heavier line provides.
