large minnow rigging

while lindy rigging with large chubs I was having trouble getting the chub to go to the bottom of the lake. The weight would go down but the chub would swim up thus causing the swivel to not go all the way to the sinker. Is there a way to rig large minnows so they will be a couple feet from the bottom???????

What type of sinker were you using?

You can loop the line through a lindy weight and back around itself (don't know the name of the knot) to hold it in place. It doesn't slide this way but it sounds like more of what you are needing it to do.

If you use a heavy enough weight, twice the weight of the bait, then keep the line tight as you slowly lower it to the bottom, keeping the swivel tight to the weight, this will make sure the the bait only has the length of the leader to the swivel to swim up with.

Two ways pop to mind.

A 3-Way rig, very simple and works well in lakes and rivers.

The other is use the Lindy Rig set up you have but add a slip bobber knot as a weight stop above the weight and a bead to keep the knot in place...this allows for an adjustable amount or run for the bait and will keep the walking weight in the zone you wish to fish.

If you want to give a large minnow free line, you can't have it both ways. The tight line/heavier sinker will work fine, but as soon as you allow slack the large minnow may take line (heck, it's a fish, right?)

Personally, I'd go with a just heavy enough sinker and the slip bobber knot. Hopefully by the time the fish gets to the stop he'll be eating and won't feel the weight...

I've never had a problem with this at all and I fish with big minnows, especially in the fall. Typically I run a 1/2oz. slip sinker. Not sure what minnows your running but they would have to be very large to actually lift a 1/2oz. sinker. If you're going along and "bouncing" your sinker on the bottom then your swivel is tight against the sinker. One thing that you could try which I do mainly when I tail hook my minnows is to trim the tail fin. They still do all the same motion but don't swim as easily.
