Last hunt of the spring

Recommended Posts

Well I got all the gear packed, double checked and loaded into the truck. Tomorrow and sunday will be my last time chasing turkeys I was asked to be a mentor for a archery turkey hunt with the Becoming a outdoor woman and the minnesota dnr, myself and seven other mentors will be out chasing birds for the next 2 days trying to get are mentee a bird. The area we are hunting has had no one ever turkey hunting on exept poachers and is thousands of acres I am very familiar with the area because I deer and turkey hunt across the road from it and their are alot of birds there. So wish me some luck and hopefully I can post pictures of 8 very happy ladies with there birds.

season is way too short... i was just about getting sick of getting up early and sitting in the woods all day, then i shot a bird and wanted to do it all over again

whats more, i'm moving to Virginia for grad school in a month or so, so all my networks for hunting will be gone! maybe i'll luck into some guys down there that'll take me under their wing, you can fall hunt and spring hunt down there too

Well we didn't get any birds all 8 ladies had a good time most of them saw bird put couldn't get them to come in. My hats off too the MN DNR and becoming a outdoor women for setting up this hunt with the university of minnesota they really put on a good hunt including sleeping arangments turkey calling and hunting class and some range time.

My mentee was a 26 year old mother of 2 who's husband found out about the hunt and filled out the application for her so while I had her out hunting he was at home with the 9 month old girl a 3 year old boy. She had just started shooting bow a month ago and after spending time on the range with her thier was no doubt in my mind if I could get the tom into 30 yards it was going for a ride in the truck.

Saturday I got there at 12:30 in a wind and rain storm and had to wait till 3 to go scout and set a blind they gave us ariel photos so I picked a field that had big norways and white pine close by figuring this might be a roosting area went back and picked her up for the evening hunt. It wasn't till about seven when I had just got done telling her about how white blue and red the tom's heads get and you can see them from along distance that se looks to my right and says there's a tom so we do the blind shuffle getting her ready and switching to a smaller shooting chair this bird was at 70 yards and just looking at the decoys I give him 2 purrs and he looks at the decoys and just slowlly walks off. At 7:30 we had 2 hen come in to 20 yards and just feed around went and got a drink and walked off that was the end of day one.

This morning we headed to the blind and got set and waited to hear some birds gobbling on the roost and nothing we sat till 8:30 and packed the gear trying to make somthing happen. We jumped in the truck and drove the boundry roads and I spotted a tom strutting in the corner of a field so we put the moves on him was able to sneek her into 80 yards of the bird and backed off to call him past her. I gave him a few purrs and he gobbled than another one to the west gobbled I didn't want to over call so I just sat quiet hopeing he would come in no luck soon the gobbles were heading away so we went and checked in and she packed her stuff up they had to be out of the dorms at 12 but she could still hunt so we went back to were that tom slipped away and set my blind and decided to hunt till 2, at 1 a hen comes in feeding to 18 yards by this time its so hot and humid out the she is panting she goes and gets a drink and feeds off. By now it's 2 so I get out of the blind and tell her I'm going to peek over the hill and see if a tom is on the other side before we go so I crouch down and peek over the hill and there is moma yote at her den with little pups playing around so I go get her and my crow call to call her in I figured with the pups she would take a easy meal ended up calling her to 40 yards before she winded us and ran off so we went up to the den and got some great pic's of some of the pup's the last few picks I was standing right over the den hole and the pups were a foot from my feet.

Email is [email protected]. Yes I saw you I checked out your topper and noticed the bow and decoys in the back grin. You were asking if we had seen Jim right after you left he came over so I could give him the gate keys and his big ariel photo back. I also noticed your little huntin partner in the back seat thumbs up for starting them young.
