Just when you think...

Man, I have to admit, I had a day off sunday.. and was PUMPED to see the weather.. I figured the water temps would be 57-60 in the area i was heading, little wind.. GANG BUSTERS>> GAME ON!!!!

Not so much.. the high pressure seemed to trump and lower water temps early in the week also seemed to trump.. I know the fish were there, they had to be.. no where else for them to be.. but by golly, could not get them to go.. 27 fish for 2 guys, so not a horrible day.. but on the way to the lake, I estimated an 80 fish day.. just seemed like the pre-spawn was going to go nuts!

FYI, before anybody goes nuts.. I was in Wisconsin.. so 100% legal...

However, what a fantastic day to be on a lake.. yowzers.. On a side note.. I have a hatred very deep for cotton wood seeds.. and at one point, seemed like I could have walked on it, it was so thick.

Doesnt sound like a bad day at all, what types of structure were you targeting and presentation.

I got 6 fish and thought it was a decent day, was on a shallow bowl shaped lake without much structure. found the fish in 2-3 near hard bottom (boulders) with some hardstems coming up. I was using senkos, swimjigs, and swimbaits (sebile soft swimmer).

btw. do you know what kind of hook comes with those soft swimmers, I got bit off and was trying to find another hook to use, I think they are 4/0 EWG

4/0 EWG is a good guess..

as far as what worked.. Early in the day we seemed to do best on traps/Flat shads in 4-6 feet on cabbage leading to spawning areas.. as the day brightened, and the real high pressure sat in.. seemed like the only thing we could get bit on was flicky shake rigs.. wacky rigs on jigs or weighted senko type baits.. similar deptch 3-7 feet.

I was thinkin the same thing deitz. I was all excited to get out Saturday morning thing Friday warmed the water up a little bit. Got out on pool 2 early saturday morning with 3 other guys. Waters temps were in the low 50's and did find temps up to 55 in back waters. Fished for 5 hours with not a single bass :-| I had 1 small one on a spinnerbait but that was it. A lot of bass boats out saturday morning so hard to find a good back water. Did manage 1 14 3/4 inch crappie...it was a pig. Well hopefully next weekend will be better!!!

Deitz we found a lot of fish 12"-16" (all males) up in the reeds, probably building nests. They'd hit just about anything we threw, but it was at times a roll of the dice on whether you could get them out of the thick patches. We tried fishing thick weeds (and I could see all sorts of tiny perch swimming through them so the food was there), and we couldn't catch anything there. Deeper breaks, not much there either. If it was a sparsely weeded flat only pike seemed to be there. Just couldn't find the big girls. I did get one 12" walleye that thought it was a bass. Middle of the afternoon, bright sunshine, and it hit a crankbait right next to a boat lift in some pretty shallow water.

I was out on pool 4 walleye fishing and there was nothing going on so in the afternoon we went into a backwater area in search of some bass. We flipped some shallow wood that looked really good but only managed 1 small one in about an hour and a half.
