Color of the Fishing line

Recommended Posts

not true.. because of its wave length, the color red turns grey rather soon. So while its still no longer red, it is still grey..

the more cover(Weeds, wood ect) you are fishing the less important line shyness is.. However, if in open water situations, you may run into a few more line shy fish.

This year I tried out the new color changing line that is orange and highly visibility above the water, and apparently becomes clear once it is under water a ways. Only boated a few fish so far so I can't really say if I'm a beleiver or not.

I am not a fan of red power pro, when I used it before the red dye stained the rod's cork handle and also stained my hands / fingers.

I'm using some Berkely Trans Optic this year - the line Tony referred to that is high vis above the water and clear in the water. So far I'm not too impressed --- it is not as high vis as I was hoping above the water (and I'm not that much of a fan of Trilene to start with). I don't think I'll be stripping it off my reels or anything like that, but I don't think I'll be buying any more of it either.

I have one of my river reels spooled with hi-vis Suffix tangerine and like it a lot for flipping jigs. Helps you see the bite when it is windy like the last week. I spooled it on last October and hated it as I do not think it performed well in the cold weather (below freezing). I see no diference in the amount of bites due to the color on the river. I do not think I would use it on any clear lakes.

When I purchase line, I tend to go with some that turns (claims to anyways) transperant or "vanishes!". I also try to go as thin and least lbs that I can get away with, its also why I make my own 6' leaders so I can go almost unnoticed to picky eye's but also have the stronger line on the reel. Also, depending on what you're fishing, dynamic and static line can have a factor as well. For walleye or jig purposes I'll lean towards a very Static line with little give to give me the best "feel" vs a more dynamic line that is better for more action fish like bass/pike/muskie. I can't comment on colored lines as I don't use them and don't won't to mislead you...but I've heard and through basic science is that Red WILL lose its color at a certian depth but you still have a shad of grey as others have said. The line you bought should be fine for most fishing activites but for jigging and lindy riggin you may want to tie on a homemade leader of different line at a swivel, that way you can keep your line on the reel. Trial and error....give it a try!
