I made my first visit to my bullhead pond today.

I catch everything from cute lil 3 inchers to about a max of eight inches.

What do you do with your shorty's i throw back the sub 5 inchers, what do you do with em are they worth there space in the tank?

And i caught a few too any today i like to keep 20 on hand i got 32 any one want some (ten), preferably in trade for another species?

Blake, I keep the sub 5 inchers. (Well, depending on how slow the fishing is at my spot for them) I generally like to keep 15-20 on hand, as my current bait tank is fairly inadequate for larger numbers. The smaller ones are perfect for cut-bait. Snip off the head and tail and you have some primo cut-bait amigo.

well seeing that i do some pool two walleye fishin i think that i will keep them and jig em, never tryed it, never thought too!!

Do you guys shy away from the head and tail?

on my cut bait applications i make three pieces outta a 5 inch bait, (head upper belly, lower belly/tail) weather it be shad bully or sucker.

You?

Is the belly piece going to out really out-fish the heads/tails? they must leave nearly as equal scent trail, moreso the heads.

I typically tip the tail piece with an already in use bait that has been soaking in the river for a while, to kinda re-up the potion.

Dude, I have heard mixed things. I have always thought that the heads were fantastic, and they would seem to be so, as they have lots and lots of blood in them. But honestly, out of all the cutbait I have fished, I have yet to pull one up on a head. Now, not saying that it won't work, only that I have not had success on them. I still wouldn't rule them out. The belly portion is great, lots of juices, guts, blood. But my first big channel this year was caught on a tiny piece of the bullie before the tail. So idk dude, I think they all will work ... they're all gonna smell like food to a kitty. Just make sure to change them out often. I change mine religiously every 20-30 minutes ...

I love using the head section of smaller suckers/chubs. I cut it back to get some meat/belly in it as well.

Unless it's a big bait like a 12" and the head is the size of an apple, I don't like those.

I would not rule out the little guys as far as good bait for larger flatheads. Not the most preferred, but a 3-4" bully is better than digging for the stink bait from the bottom of the tackle box when the 2 dozen you brought with are being used up on a good evening bite. It does seem at time smaller can be effective in certain areas and times of year.

Those sub bully's are what caught my three biggest channels last year and they were alive I was fishing them during the day. As shack mentioned sometimes the smaller bullies will just work better. If you want to fish for rough fish (eyes) you could get them on the smaller bullys also.

Those little bullys are awesome for eyes. We pick up some sumo saugs and eyes on 2-3" bullies, hooked through the back. We cut the sharp fins, dont' know if that helps but it has worked for us. Good thing about fishing borders waters, one pole for the eye, and one for the cat.

Thats cool shack!

Next question, bullheads got them spikes in the fins how many of us in here clip them, I have to imagine that they are a defense mechinism, if i were a catfish id spit that thing out as soon as i got pricked.

IMO big baits=big fish in the end.

Even for those eyes. wink

A 30"+ incher had no issue taking down a bully all of 7" back in 08 on Pool 2. grin

Not always the case lol ... I wish it were a fact ... but ....

Last year ... threw on a fat 12" sucker in high hopes of catching a monster flat ... pulled up a baby with a monster appetite. 24" flat took a 12" sucker ... grin

Oh and here is a video of the fish too ... cell phone camera so pardon the shakiness.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
