Benefits of AGM or Optima Battery

tunrevir

Question

So I have been looking at the all glass matt and Optima batteries to upgrade my power source in the boat. Anyone have experience with these types of batteries? I like the 36 month warranty on the optima but the agm seems to have more reserve capacity and a sightly lower price tag. Any thoughts or should I half the cost and stick with a new deep cycle. This battery would be used primarily to power the trolling motor so I assume the reserve capacity is the most important factor to consider.

I am on my second set of AGMs from Cabelas for a 24 volt bowmount. The first set were made by Exide and lasted 10 seasons. I don't know who makes them now. I bought 2 group 24 batteries since they have basically the same reserve capacity as the 27s, plus they are smaller and lighter. No worries about checking water levels.

I don't think the "high end" batteries are worth it. They have to last at least 2x - 3x longer, maybe more, than a conventional "deep cycle" battery to offset the often much higher price.

Until you have a conventional lead-acid battery tip over in the back of your truck and leak all over your fishing gear. Its going to be all AGM batteries from here on out for me.

Yep, I have a discolored softside tacklebag from a little battery splash in the back of the truck which is another reason I'm looking at the AGM or Optima. Looks like they are faster charging and are supposed to last 2-3x longer or more from what I have read.

Ok...but that's not really the fault of the battery. I'll still be using conventional batteries for the best price vs. performance ratio. Hard for me to argue with $60-70 for 8 years of service (which, btw, I mostly accredit to good charging practices).
