Navionics or Lakemaster for new HDS system?

311Hemi

Question

Anyone know if one of these is better than the other for lakes in MN? I have used older Lakemaster maps on a hand held GPS, but am not very familiar with the newer maps from either company. Just curious if one would be better than the other for lakes like Mille Lacs, Leech, etc.

My vote would be for Lakemaster. If you get the new 2010 chip, it even has the contours for the Mississippi pools now. I have both navionics and lakemaster chips only because lakemaster didn't have the river pools 2-3 mapped.

Almost as good in the HDS, but you loose some functionality because you do not get the function of changing shading by depths as you do with the Hummer's. Yet the detail is the same otherwise.

It's my understanding this is a new feature for HB and was never there for Lowrance......so your not really losing anything...your just gaining in this aspect when buying a HB.

Anyone have any thoughts on if the Insight chip is worth it, double the cost and only 770 lakes vs the Lakemaster 2010 chip that has 1020. Looks like the 2010 chip also has other extra's over the Insight chip (Snowmobile trails, State Park Trails, MN State hiking Trails, and more Forestry Roads).

I assume they both have 1' contours, just that the Insight gives shaded relief in addition to the contours. Not sure the shaded relief is worth it?

I bought the insight before I realized it didn't have as many HD maps and other features as the regular 2010 chip. Personally I wish I would have gotten the extra maps over the shading and saved a few $$.

Good to know. You bought the Insight chip (not built in to the unit)....correct?

I have read that once you zoom to a certain lever the relief shading is removed, is that correct? Do you know at what zoom level it's removed?

My brother bought a Lakemaster for LOTW for use in his HDS8. The water and the islands are blue. Different shades of blue but still blue.

Haven't been able to figure out how to change that or find anyone who knows how to do it.

Not real impressed.
