DAD WANTS TO BUY RIFLE!

Recommended Posts

Ford, Dodge, Chevy..... Savage makes nice guns that are affordable and accurate, Mossberg makes some nice, affordable guns, Tikka shouldn't be overlooked, the old reliable Remington 700, or Winchester model 70, used would be affordable. Pretty much any gun will shoot better than the shooter these days if a person tries some different ammo and takes the time to go out and spend some time shooting, not just a couple hours sighting it in before the season. Check out the shops that have big selections and have him handle a few, also check out some gun shows, there can be deals had on nice guns there, otherwise shop around for price, big and small shops alike. There are a lot of variables to consider here, calibers will change price, stocks: wood vs synthetic, camo or not, actions: bolt, semi-auto, lever, single shot. I can give you opinions all day, but it will come down to what he really likes and what the budget will support, inexpensive and accurate can be quite relative terms to each individual.

My dad wants to buy a big game rifle. Whats a good gun for 100 to 400 yards. Very accurate. Not very expensive. Just an all around good gun. Any one have any opinions, He would greatly appreciate.

What is he going to hunt mostly? If just Whitetail hard to beat the 30.06. I would stay with a Caliber you can pick up at any gas station upnorth when you need to anywhere in the state. It's hard to find the odd-ball calibers or one's like a Weatherby just anywhere and the cost of bullets is cheaper with the .06 IMO. wink

The venerable ol .270 or .06 would be my recommendation. I've killed deer and antelope at 400 yards with both calibers. Deciding which to carry on certain days is a flip of the coin. No sense in arguing the merits of either. However, I think I'd side with the .270. Too many brand names and models to make a recommendation. Find one that has a good feeling heft within your price range, put on a decent scope and start popping caps.
