Be Careful at Auctions

Recommended Posts

People like to change out the factory clusters in the GM trucks and replace them with the "upscale" versions from Caddy's and Denali's which have chrome bezels and fancy lettering. They are a bolt-in part as the dash in a Caddy or Denali is exactly the same as a Silverado and you can find these clusters online all over the place. Most of them are new parts so when they are swapped in they will show zero miles on the odometer. By law you are supposed to either adhere a sticker inside the door jam indicating the cluster was replaced and the previous mileage on the old cluster, or have it reprogrammed to reflect the vehicle's correct mileage.

It would be super easy for a seller to take a cluster out of a wrecked truck of similar vintage and plop it into the vehicle in question and sell it at the auction misrepresenting the correct mileage.

More than likely due the high miles it went from the dealership to the auction and perhaps got detailed in between. Most dealerships don't want high mile vehicles sitting on there lots.

Another possibility is when your dad traded in the dealer had him just sign the title to his old truck and THEY wrote mileage in after swapping out the cluster. The only person in this world I trust is myself
