Leech lake Knives

walleyewild

Question

My Girlfriend bought me one at the sportshow this weekend.

I guess she wants me to fish more, so I have a knife that'll stay sharper longer.

How do you like the knife?

How often do you send it in to get a new edge put on it?

Thanks,

WW

I've had mine for 10 years and have bought 3 of my friends ones for gifts. I used to get it sharpened every year at the show but now go every two since I haven't cleaned as many fish. I still catch fish just don't keep as many. You will enjoy it.

They're dangerous and I have seen more than couple people cut themselves with a LL knife! I would highly suggest a fillet glove when using a LL.

One tip to keep it sharp is make sure you use the top-side for cutting through skin/ scales and the bottom side for filleting.

Mine stayed sharped for at least 5 years using the correct method where as my friends knifes were dull the first year using the knife incorrectly.

Do you still run this knife over a steel after each use? or do you not do anything to it until it actually needs sharpening?

I just use one of those small set of crock sticks and give it a couple of swipes each time before I start filleting. I have sharpened mine maybe twice in the last 10 years and like Pierbridge I always like to use a glove because I can get a better gripe and I have never cut myself since I started to wear one and it makes the whole process a lot faster.

so is this knife worth the money?

It is a very good knife and looks great but to me as long as a knife is sharp and the blade has good flex it will clean fish with no problems. I used a friends and it was so much better then the knife I had been using that when I went by the booth at the sport show and because I had the money I decided to splurge and get one for myself. That day there was no other knifes there that looked like mine and he engraved it with my name so it feels like it is one of a kind knife made just for me.

Thanks all,

My dad was a meatcutter for 35 years and taught me at a young age how to handle a knife, as our knives at home were very sharp.

I am looking forward to using this knife for the first time, and am glad to know that it holds it's edge well if used properly.

I'll pobably screw up the first walleye I fillet with it so I might aas well start with the smallest one first. smile

I was given one as a birthday gift by my wife. She was "told" by the resort owner that "I needed one".

I was not real happy that she was "convinced" to buy one from him as they are expensive.

That has been over ten years ago and I can only say that I wished I had spent the money MUCH sooner!

Yes! YES! YES!!!! They are worth the money!!!
