Side swimming rainbow?

PGS

Recommended Posts

I have been fishing the local trout pond in Rochester and noticed a strange thing on my camera. I have seen a fish swimming on it's side. The pond I am fishing is stocked with old brood fish from the DNR rearing pens in SE MN. I am wondering if this is a fish that is injured in transport or maybe just a bad release? Or is this normal behavour for trout? The side swimmer or swimmers seem to be struggling to move through the water and have shown no interest in baits. But then none of the normal swimming fish seem to be interested right now either....

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this one before?

They aren't rainbows, but I've seen the brown trout at Cabela's swim on their side like that sometimes too. I don't know what they're doing, but it looks funny.

those fish swim sideways to pick something off the bottom, or often look like they are "scratching an itch" on their side

After the input here, I would expect that it is an injuried fish. The low O2 level would make sense if there were several acting this way but it only one fish in a group of 4-6. I have never seen more than one doing this so I dont know if it is the same fish or if there is more than one in this state. I was told that the DNR had stocked the pond about 1 week ago so probably just one that didnt make the trip well.

I have seen this before. Ranch we stay at in MT they have a trout pond and a fish they call "Old Ironsides" because he swam on his side. Owners think he was injured by a bird however made it and still survives swimming on his side. Because of this he looks like he is "flashing" similar to when you see wild trout pick off the bottom for caddis casings and nymphs etc.

Neat find on your underwater camera!
