nils hand auger

Well I am in need of a new hand auger as my lazer is no longer with me.

My question is to those who have used both a lazer and a nils...How does a 8" nils compare to a 6" lazer? The reason I ask is that everyone I see raving about the nils says it cuts much better, but how much better?

I have used a 6" lazer for early ice, backup and bwcaw duty for years and I got it because it is quicker through the ice, easier and lighter than the 8". Im just wondering if a 8" nils would require the same amount of effort as the smaller lazer?

Part of my curiocity about this is that if I were to get the nils eventually I'm sure I would end up getting a powerhead for it and I really would like a 8" hole for that.

I have been running a hand lazer and then switching to my lazer mag once the ice is thicker but having just one setup would be nice. My lazer mag is still running fine so I don't see getting another power auger as a need but maybe in the future it would be worth the upgrade. I may even mate the strikemaster powerhead to the nils but that is another story.

I saw my first nils hand auger about two weeks ago. I ask the guy to show it off. I was impressed by how easy he cut the hole.

I have a borrowed hand me down auger that I think is an early Eskimo, looking forward to owning a new auger someday and a nils sure would be nice.

What would have to be done to put a nils on the strikemaster powerhead? I would be interested in that since you can resharpen the nils..

SCOOTER---- Where is the best place to get the NILS blades resharpened??

Would like a MINN. location, if any out there........

Not sure yet but if I do get a nils I'm going to fab something up for it. I'm more than willing to take a half hour to make something to adapt it to my powerhead. everyone says they cut great with that little tanaka imagine what they will do with a big motor. grin

Oh yeah and Surface Tension on here resharpens the blades.

Look up the FMer named Surface Tension. He is an authorized NILS sharpener.

I would definately be sending it to surface tension for any sharpening needed. He has a very good rep on here which he should be proud of. I'm sure something can be made for putting the Nils on the tecumseh powerhead but does anyone currently have this setup? Deadeye i'm not sure the bigger motor will change much the gear ratio is a slower one on the strikemaster vs tanaka. Would be sweet to see/use though .Think it would be good!

If I got a nils it would be pretty much free to try otherwise. I got the strikemaster powerhead already and a welder and materials so its worth a shot. It might be a fail but its worth a shot. Failure means I at least tried so why not try. grin

Btw, thanks esoxmagnum for that info. That's exactly what I was after.

I figured if you can go with a bigger auger with no penalty then why not. I have always been happy with how my lazer did compared to the mora when I got that. The lazer satisfied me with the way it cut and I didn't feel like it was much work so if a nils cuts better even with a bigger blade then sweet.

Now I just gotta find one of those things somewhere. Its looking like marine general might be the only place that has them in stock. Cabelas didn't have any and the ops is outa stock. Now I just gotta find a reason to go to duluth or wait to have it shipped out.

I got another question for those that own one of these.

Could I get a six inch auger for hand augering and then slap a eight inch bit on the end of it for running it as a power auger? That would pretty much have me sold on it for sure.

Thank you hamms-scooter, I appreciate that.

"Could I get a six inch auger for hand augering and then slap a eight inch bit on the end of it for running it as a power auger? That would pretty much have me sold on it for sure."

That would work BUT your going to leave a lot of ice chips in the hole. Also if your drilling into very thick ice you stand a good chance that the drill will bind. That binding will be even worse if your drilling into soft ice with slush. If you lifted the drill once in a while to help clear those chips out then it would work.

There is not a hand auger that comes remotely close to the speed and ease of a Nils.

I get to see many Nils blades. I own a 8" Nils but of coarse test drill the 8", 6", and 4.5". I have a few combinations of drills that I made with Nils heads. One is a Mora hand drill with a Nils head. SM powerhead with a Mora drill and Nils head. SM powerhead, SM drill, and Nils head. Of coarse I have the Nils Master Power Auger with the Tanaka Powerhead. The later is the fastest, most dependable, and lightest. So as long as you have a clockwise rotation powerhead, when there is a will there is a way.

I modified an Ice Gator adaptor to connect my Strikelite powerhead to my 6" Nils hand auger. It was fairly easy, just took some file work get things to fit. That combination cuts great, is light, and was nice for late season, thick ice, panfishing.

I decided I want to get one but I can not find a 8 in hand auger anywhere. All the dealers I have called in state are out for the season so I guess I may have to wait till next season. frown oh well I will have to knock on wood that I don't have to use the old mora if the lazer mag gives up the ghost.

I will put my post in the classified ads, if I can figure out how.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
