I haven't fished a metro lake for a while (and it's not always just metro lakes I know), but I did last weekend. It was almost depressing how much stuff was lazily left out there. I probabaly took 2 brown grocery size bags off junk off the ice. I would love to see the book thrown at the violators.

having grown up on the lake, every year its always interesting to see what comes floating up. its too bad that there are a few that give us all the label"pigs" I say the worst is the fecal matter left in trash bags on the ice...I mean come on seriously!!

For the county I live in - where it seems every third car is a patrol/county-sheriff/lakes-police car; I don't see a lot of CO/GW activity on my lake - and sure it's not as actively fished as some - but there are folks leaving their [PoorWordUsage] all over. I've picked up receipts, cans, bottles, tons of cigarette butts - from dingleberries already - probably two kitchen garbage bags full of [PoorWordUsage] so far.

I've come to just patrol my area for [PoorWordUsage] left behind and toss it in my sled and shuttle it home, each time I'm out.

I would rather see them get community service, there are too many people with enough money to see it as "paying for the privilege" of littering. Let them experience the shame of picking up bagged "Wrinklekneck Brown Trout" off of the lake, while every responsible fisherman looks at them in disgust.

Who needs sessions on how to pick up garbage? ;-)

Being a ferocious supporter of LNT (lnt.org) - I've taught my boys there are there three starter rules to backpacking/camping/being-outdoors.

#1 - be quiet, if you spook the animals, you can't see them.

#2 - don't throw anything on the ground, what you bring in, you take out.

#3 - Pick up all trash you see, even if it isn't yours.

That was six years ago when they first started going into the backcountry with me, at aged 3. To this day, I still see them doing it - we went out on the lake to do ice fishing a couple weekends back - and one of my boys came trompsing back with a wrapper of sorts found on the ice. Didn't notice him doing it until he tossed it in the waste can.
