1/25 Tip of week...

I had a hard time coming up with something for the tip. The question I get the most is how to fish deep.

So my tip is this.. Use your electronics to really learn an area. Keep focused on the bottom reading your getting. The use of an underwater camera can help a ton as well. But really search out an area, GPS key areas of change. And then come back to that area later in the day.

Depending on how deep it is, you can put the fish on a bit of a "high Alert" status by driving over the top of them.. But the only way to learn the area is to really scout it out... SO, scout it out and then sneak back in and cast to the high percentage areas. Your catch rate will go up, and you will then gain more confidence on your deep water fishing.

Deitz, what do you consider deep? I think this may vary also depending on the overall lake depth. Deep in one lake may be 10 ft where another lake would be 20 ft+.

Thanks, Joel

Joel- thats just it.. its really going to depend on the lake and the water clarity.. Deep on Chisago mid summer can be 10 feet, where 10 feet on Big Marine is shallow.. For me, I call deep any depth past the weed edge..

Don't forget the big walleyes that use the schools of bait fish in real deep water suspended as structure also. lake of the woods has been like that this last couple of weeks. Alot of suspended walleyes half way up off the bottom feeding like crazy and real Aggressive strikes.

I have only fished the weed edge when fishing deeper water. What other structures should I check out?

Most of the time when I find Bass in deep water there is a dropoff nearby to deeper water. I know it sounds odd. What I mean is Take a large shallow bay that slowly tapers to 15FOW then drops to 25'. Work around the edge looking for something differant. Sand, rock, grass anything. Just remember no matter what you do make contact with the bottom! Be it with a crankbait or a jig. There is a reason why a big heavy weight on a C-rig works in deep water.

Also look for up wellings on the up wind side of the lake.

For me I troll the areas ticking the bottom with crankbaits and set waypoints when I find fish. You cover an area fast and find active fish. Then you can come back at any other time and throw a worm or crankbait when you want to look like the pros.
