Barometeric Pressure

What is considered low pressure in winter. I know low pressure that is steady or dropping pressure is good. But this morning(10:30am)it was 29.90 and steady. Just curious what you all think is considered low.

Why does the fishing become poor below 28.8? I was always under the understanding that high pressure is what causes worse fishing? A very interesting topic.

29.8 -> 30.2 Good Fishing

Above 30.2 Average Fishing

Below 28.8 Poor Fishing.

I have seen some listed up to 30.4 for Good.

I monitor the trends with Weather Underground.

Not sure realistically if it ever goes down as low as 28.8. Mid 29's is pretty low. I've never found it very accurate as to whether fish bite better or not.

The problem I have with the whole pressure deal is if a fish moves up or down an inch or two the pressure difference on them is more than the air pressure will ever cause.

But, high pressure equals bright skys and tougher conditions and low pressure usually indicates cloudy skys and more favorable conditions to catch fish under.

I've never put much faith in it and more faith in local conditions. Just my two cents.

I've always felt that steady pressure is best whether it is a little high or low. The roller coaster ride of pressure up pressure down and fronts moving in and out every day or so is worse than a steady barometer at any level. I've had good luck with pressure in the low 30's that has maintained for a period of time. High pressure systems right behind a major front can really turn things off. Just my nickels worth....

I agree a steady pressure=good fishing and fluctuating pressure will cause the fish to slow down and not be very aggressive. Right before a big front comes in can be lights out fishing and after it moves through they will shut down usually because pressure drops. You can still catch fish under any condition Ive just noticed its consistantly better during steady pressure.

I have caught lots of fish at 29.8. But agree with ron basser. A fish moving up and down in the water column is more of a pressure change than 30-29.5 is. Or thats what the books say. And will agree that steady pressure is the best.

I think it helps to have some moonlight for the walleye bite. Not sure if it's the cycle or just the extra light for the fish to see the bait. I have poor luck on new moons for night fishing.

Got my fishing barometer in the mail Today. Woohoo! I'm curious to see if this helps with any fishing success pattern prediction.

I've tried the fishing barometer that I orderred for a couple days now. Yesterday it said poor fishing. I didn't even get a bite. I figure the real test is when it says great fishing. It did that Today. I went out for about an hour and a half and caught one pike, one walleye, and lost about 5 other fish. So far the fishing barometer gadget seems to be accurate. Hope it can help me get on a pattern.

I think the lunar cycle and the barometric pressure affect the fish. Correct me here, but the pressure's been low and the fishing good for the last 3-5 days...

Don't think these indicators are the end-all, be-all but they can help immensely.

edit: I sould have clarified, but the hot bite has been later in the day for me - 2:30 - sundown.

who needs to buy a barometer>? all you have to do is walk out side and tell if the barometric pressures high or LOW! and there is no gauge or meter that will tell you when exactly the fish are going to eat and people that believe that are in DREAMLAND! ALSO the fishing COULD be great and you could be in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing ...Not trying to sound rude because barometric pressure does play a big part in fish activity but simply reading a gauge isnt going to bring magical fishing trips .

I'm really wondering if it's just coincidence, but the new fishing barometer has really been predicting my success. I fish almost every night and have been tracking it. Tonight it said great fishing and I caught two walleyes in a short time on the ice. Maybe the big moon helped. Still tracking it and curious about why this seems to be working for me.

It doesn't seem logical but it sure is working so far. When it says great fishing I usually catch one or two sundown walleyes, and when it says poor fishing I get skunked. Maybe the barometric pressure is just an indicator of something else that has a greater effect on the fish mood.
