Driving on the ice

Do you think most of the lakes are safe right now for a 3/4 ton truck? The lake I live on has 16 inches of ice and I get a little uneasy thinking about my big truck on there unless there is a good 2 feet.

If you don't feel good about it, then don't do it. No reason to put yourself through something when it's supposed to be enjoyable, right?

16 inches? you could drive a semi out.

Just because there is 16 in. where you checked does;t mean there is 16 in. all over the lake, check the area you want to fish if no one has been there yet, might be in for a suprise.

drive with the windows down, or at least part way down, and get out and drill a hole every hundred yards or so.. this is an instance where it's very much better to be safe rather then sorry

I drive with my door partially open and seat belt off. Driving on a frozen lake is like skydiving, it ain't natural and your first mistake might be your last.

I may be incorrect and I'm only making a comment for us to think about. I would lean towards driving with your window down before driving with the door part way open. I would think that if your vehicle does go through the ice and into the water that the weight of the water would push your door shut. Now lets say your arm or leg is now stuck between the door and the door frame. One would think that you will not be able to reopen the door until the pressure is even when the vehicle is full of water. I'm guessing one would have a better chance of getting out an open window. What ever works for everyone but I thought I would throw that out there to think about.

The guys plowing the roads on Mille Lacs have ther doors part open on early ice to try to get out before the truck goes under.

I like to punch a hole about every 30 to 50 yards just to make sure there is enough ice there. Especially if I'm one of the first ones out.

could be if the door is open far enough it might slow or stop the truck

from going down

i like to drive my 4wheeler for awhile before i drive my truck out there. just makes me nervous so far i havent had a reason why i would need my truck out on the ice.

regardless of the ice thickness I drive SLOW with the window down and one hand on the door handle.
