Cancun-Anyone ever fish there?

Headed to Cancun mid february. Wondering if anyone has any advice? I wouldn't mind doing a shared charter or something like that, or some inshore stuff. Any experiences shared would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hey., went there years ago caught small tarpon in the lagoon on a rapala ,wading in the mud or whatever it is . but on the ocean side i was snorkeling and did see barracudas just off the beach break, scared the bajeebies out of me. there are tellow tail snapper there too (i think YTS ) and clawless lobster, but all i got were their anntennae..

Raps would work for the cudas

Probably not what you're looking for, but theres a great sailfish bite that happens every feb-march off isla Mujeres, fairly close to cancun. I haven't fished there, but they do some very good numbers of sails.

I expect it's quite expensive though...lots of boats go down from the east coast for a few weeks to fish then, and they typically charge big $$, and want you to charter the boat for the day (or multiple days), not likely you'd be able to get on as a solo, but I don't know that for sure. i could ask on a couple of the salt baords if you're really interested, but I'd expect to drop close to a grand (or more). Sounds like a lot, but the really good offshore fishing don't come cheap.

I know there are opportunities for inshore down there...

We fished on a shared charter out of Playa on our honeymoon (a little south of Cancun). We were with Captain Rick's. If you can swing it, I would highly recommend not doing a shared charter. It greatly decreases your odds of catching your own fish. My wife caught a nice mahi mahi. We had another hookup with a small sailfish, but that was it. Personally, now that I have done the deep sea thing once, I would focus my attention on inshore. We recently were in Puerto Rico and went tarpon fishing in the lagoons. Just the guide, my wife, and I in a small flats boat. We had an absolute blast and much prefered that.

Oh, and do your research beforehand. I would not book a trip with the folks at the hotel/resort. I researched and booked our tarpon trip beforehand.

I have fished Cancun several times, mostly sails out of Isla, it is not cheap, but well worth the money to do it at least once! I would recommend the Lilly M out of Isla.http://www.islamujeressportfishing.com/

Anthony and his crews will fish hard for you. one thing that takes getting used to is that the best fishing is mid to late in the day. Hard to sit around for the morning knowing you are going Sail fishing!

I usually put a post on an Isla Mujeres message board http://www.islamujeres.info/communicating/open_forum.asp

asking if anyone wants to share, This will cut your cost in half. I have fished with the Keen and Lilly M boats they knwo what they are doing you can book the Lilly M for $800 for a full day http://www.islamujeressportfishing.com/

I recommend not sharing with more than two other people. You can expect 4-6 bites on average, but I have hooked up with as many as 20 Sails.

I have also fished with a local guy in the lagoons near cancun, not sure if he is around cant find his web site? That was a great trip though lots of snook, had shots at a few trapon and hooked a shark on a topwater bait.

I would not recommend wading in the lagoons!! They are full of lots of nasty tiny Jelly fish that can wreck your day.

Thanks for the advice guys.

The trip I originally planned got canceled due to bad weather. So I ended up just jumping on a share charter my last day. Had fun with it, we got into a lot of barracuda, amberjack, and a couple of king macks.

I have stayed in Akumal, about 70k south of cancun, there is good shore fishing both north and south of there, and about another 20k south is boca piala bridge, that is where all the locals were shore fishing. There is a little river that empties into a beach that was empty for miles. Drag a crappie jig and twister tail across the bottom and you will fill up on little puffers haha just dont eat em lol.

get ur snorkle some fishing line a hook and a pop bottle.. tie the line to pop bottle so u can wrap the line around it... fill a ziplock with shrimp and bunches of bread.. wade out there a little ways and start tossing bread crumbs.. creates a frennze... throw some line out there with shrimp and watch underwater with goggles .. pretty sweet.. i was pulling in yellow tails that were 3-5 ponds swim back to shore and do it again.. FYI do not put the shrimp in your pocket had a small shark circling around my nads!! i got the heck out of there... what an incredible experince

I was just there last week and I wish I would have been prepared for the fishing. I didnt think much of it at the time but we stayed at the Valentin Imperial Maya and we had guys catching fish from shore everyday.

While swimming in the ocean down there I was talking to a guy from Canada about all the fish we were seeing. He said if you bring some bread out there the fish will come in like crazy. There were all over and we didn't even have any food with us.

I also took a snorkeling excursion out from a place near Playa del Carmen and they put out a couple rods while were were moving but we didn't catch anything. Saw lots of fish snorkeling though.

I went out with a charter and did bottom fishing. Had a good time catching Barracudas and Amberjack. The big inland bay on the other side of the strip looked like it would be fun to fish if I would have brought my own equipment. Saw a number of Tarpon and a few other species around the docks and harbors on the bay.
