Jiffy

Question for you guys: I bought a new Jiffy last year.. It starts up fine but it will quit running if you let off the throttle. Especially between holes. Ya I have put fresh gas in it. And yes I also have a Strike Master but I wanted a 10" auger. Is there a adjustment or something? I don't want to bring it in and wait 2 weeks or whatever it is.... When I started it in the summer it idled fine...??? Sorry my spelling is off tonight I might of had a beer or 2.

Mine did the same thing, I don't know what any part names are so here goes: When you move the throttle w/your hand, it's connected to a little thing that turns on the motor/carb, there is a little screw with a pointed end. Just tighten it up a bit, it will get your auger idling faster, move it just a little bit at a time til you get it where you want it.

Set the idle low enough to prevent the auger from turning. Being the auger is so new I would be inclined to run it more before messing with it. My new jiffy I got three years ago had similar problems, but got better after it was broken in. If you must try to fix it start with a good carb cleaning. You should have two adjustment screws, a high speed and low speed. If it won't idle you need to adjust the low speed screw. Small adjustments (1/8 turn) and checking for improvement as you go. Some of the newer carbs have one of the adjustment screws capped if I remember right?

The low speed is the one on the left. High speed should have an H or HH on it as well. Turning counterclockwise richens the mixture. You'd want to richen the mixture if you have problems in colder weather since the air is more dense. Running too rich is safer for the engine than running too lean.

Don't adjust high speed off the lake! It should sound like it is running rough when not under load ie in the garage. To properly adjust high speed settings the engine needs to be under load. Take it out to a lake and make small adjustments between holes. You should perform all adjustments under the conditions the auger will be used in.

That is what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation on that.

This Auger and my mech. skills are garbage. OK its most likely my mech skills. I got it running good out on the lake lastnight until it ran out of gas. Now it will start then run, but it dies shortly after... What gives? I called a shop and I would have to wait 2 weeks..... I am planning on going to LOTW tomorrow...Anybody know of a shop that I can get in or out of quickly? Or anything I can do myself?

I don't know if it is the same as my Strikemaster, but the last 2 years I've emptied the gas in spring, and come fall it is a royal pain to get started.

Try taking out the sparkplug, pouring a bit of gas (mixed) in the cylinder, put the sparkplug back in, and start it. I did that over and over, and OVER :-) until it got going. It wasn't pulling gas through the carb properly, but now it runs like a champ, as always.

pop the red caps off.

Close both jets GENTLY

Open the Low speed 1/4 turn

Open High speed jet 1 1/4 turn

Start engine.

Adjust low speed until idling smoothly.

Open her up wide open.

Adjust High speed until engine transitions smoothly from idle to high speed without bogging.

Shut engine off. Let it cool.

Once engine is cold. Fire it up and let it idle for 30 secs. Open it up wide open again. Adjust if necassary.

The trick with the Jiffy's is to tune them during cold (ice fishing) weather.

Low speed screw, the one on the left.

High speed on the right.

Awesome info..... Went outside and it seems to run good now. Do you lean it out to give it more on the top end? It just seems to me like it should rev high when I open it up.
