Flasher Info from Scheels

Recommended Posts

Tonight I had a little free time, so I figured I would try and do a little Christmas shopping. Being the outdoors type, before long I was in Scheels looking at Flashers. I asked 3 workers there if they carried a VX-1. They told me no only the lx-5, and to stay away from Marcum at all costs. They said the company is completely unstable being bought out, and that their product quality just isn't there. They nearly shoved the FL-8, 12, and 20 down my throat. One of them went as far to say that he has only seen one other person with a Marcum on the ice ever because the company is struggling so much and can't sell units! I didn't buy what they said though, and will still probably pick up a VX-1. Just looking for a few other comments and some advice. Am I still going to be satisfied picking up a VX-1 and get a quality product? They really confused me! Thanks

Obviously the person you talked to isn't aware the company was bought out by the folks who previously manufactured the units for MarCum. I'd also say he's not a very knowledgeable person with respect to ice fishing electronics. The VX1 is a fine lower end flasher and comparable to the FL18. Great Value for the money.

Thanks for the help, and yes they had the lx-5 which would sure be nice; Too bad I am on a tight budget as a college student. It looks like the VX-1 will be my new weapon of choice on the ice over Christmas break!

The vx-1 has zoom on it? That would be a great buy if its same as fl -18... Remember that most people have one flasher and have only used one kind so of course they will knock the others when they have no clue. I run a fl-8se it works great for me but its not the greatest unit under the sun im sure. These sales guys are giving a narrow minded and limited experience opinion.

Esox, I know youre a marcum guy but have you had the chance to use a bird ice55? Wondering what you would think of it because you have used a few different brands now.I saw one my buddy was using and i thought the display was nice with the 6 colors.Zoom was also cool with ability to move anywhere. Be interested to hear what you think of them...

true about vexilar being overall the most used, but individual, lx-5 has the most votes

It is because Vex has been around alot longer. I have seen my dad (he has an FL18) admire the bright, crisp display of my MarCum, which doesn't need a magnifyer on it wink

Only played with them at the Bait Shop, havent used one on the ice yet. Couple friends got them last year but didn't last long enough for me to try them out. 1 went with a FL-20 other a LX-5. They look nice but untill I use one can't say how or if I would like it. I will say I do not like HB due to past experience with their open water units but would try one out on the ice if I had the chance.

My buddy and his brother both had to send theirs in to be fixed.. they both had the bottom going up and down on the display. They said it was like being in a boat without bottom lock feature on. they were both fixed under warranty...your buddies had them and traded or sold them off? might say something... what was their reasoning? what didnt they like?

and about the flasher poll, more people love their Vexilars....

From what I have heard, I would stay away from Scheels. With the remarks about MarCum, they seem to know very little or are very confused.

MarCum is working its way back and the polls show that MarCum is gaining fast on the 50 year old Vex company.

I bought my 1st vex years ago because it was basically the only option. I still use one because they have been so reliable, i had no reason to switch to another brand. One of my buds has an lx3 and it's been great for him. This debate gets played out year after year.

By the way, my chevy truck is better than your dodge or ford.
