Night Yotes??

Recommended Posts

From Jan. 1st to March 15th you MAY use a spot light BUT, you must be on foot, not in a public right of way, using a shotgun, using a calling device, & not within 200 feet of vehicle.(Page 42 of regs). Iv'e heard the DEAD COYOTE shot shell is pretty good, have not tried it though. As far as a blind, I would recommend just trying to blend in with your surrounding cover best as possible (too much set-up time, and moving around setting up a blind, IMO). Back to the spot light, when a coyote is coming to your call and you get the light in his face, it does not bother them, it's like they cant see it and they keep on comin.

Last night I accidentally discovered a very good yote call. I was out coon hunting in a well populated yote area, as my dog was treeing, the yotes were coming in strong. By the time I got to the dog, there were about 15 coyotes within 25 yards from him. They were rather hesitant to leave, even after I was shining them, and yelling at them. I would hate to think what would have happened if I was a couple minutes later.

I don't recommend using your pooch as bait!

So how many did you get? wink

Didn't shoot any last night, was to busy searching for my other dog. Hunting ended up being on the back burner, after not knowing were my other dog was, especially with the amount of yotes in the area.

Really, they don't see the light comming in. Do you use a red light or just any spotlight?

I have a red cover to go on the spotlight but i was using the white light, (3.5 million candlepower). they dint even flinch when i turned it on. I was kinda suprised myself. He came from about 100 yards into about 25 when i shot him smile

I have done almost all of my 'yote and fox hunting at night over the years. Allways w/a shotgun and never with a light. My personal choice for shot is dueces, lead if available, or the heavy shot. Hunt a night with a good moon, and preferably one with snow. Call 'em in close and dump 'em with the shotty.

Yup, we went with Jan 1st because all deer seasons are over by then. It just takes away all temptations. That was the DNR division of enforcement that wanted that starting date. They were worried that their CO's would be getting called out A LOT at night if it started earlier. They also didn't have to worry about guys shining deer and then just saying they were predator hunting. We ended it on March 15th to go along with the close of the fox season.
