Hastings slug barrels.

Recommended Posts

I have an rem 870 20g with a rem riffled barrel with iron sights. I am a fan of open sights but im thinking of getting a scope mounted riffled barrel for this 870 with a low magnification scope, just because i love having tons of options for my many guns. But i read in FIELD & STREAM that many competition slugsters perfer the hastings riffled barrel for long distance accuracy. I was just wondering if this is true? Or where i can find lots of hastings barrels? I was told they may be cheaper then rem barrels,etc... Anyways most major retailers seem to only carry mossberg & rem barrels, i see a few hastings but not 20g with scope mounts. Also what is a good shotgun scope? cheap or expensive, price is not really a factor, All the shotguns i own seem to have cheap scopes as i bought them mostly as combos... Basically im trying to turn this this 20g 870 into the perfect little deer gun, any suggestions would be very helpfull.

yeah, i once wanted to buy a hastings barrel for my old mans 1100 and the prices were as high as the rem barrels. If the scoped mounted barrel and the scope cost as much as the gun that is fine, seeing as the gun only cost less then $300, with the bird barrel and the slug barrel with open sights. Like i said i usually buy slug guns with combo barrels, but id like to have multiple barrels and options with every gun. If it cost more then $300 dollers thats fine to, not trying to sound like a gun yuppy but i know quality equipment cost quality money. I am more of a fishermen then im am a hunter and ive learned the hard way that u get what u pay for, even though my best rod and reel combo i own only cost me 35 bucks.

My son has a rig just like yours - the 870 20 gauge with both barrels. He was successful using the open-sight rifled barrel for several years, but was itching to get a little more range out of the thing. Since I have been shooting a Hastings cantilever on my 12 gauge 1100 for many years, the choice was easy.

We ordered the Hastings barrel from Cabela's. The scope we settled on is a 2-7 Burris Fullfield. Given his small frame at the time and the "punch" delivered by some of the newer high-speed shells, we stuck with the same slugs he had been shooting (with incredible accuracy out of the open-sight barrel), which were Remington CopperSolids in 2 3/4".

The gun drives tacks at 100. I'm not altogether pleased with the results out at 150 (bullet drop) but for most slug shooting this outfit is simply awesome.

Thanks jackpine rob, maybe ill have to have one ordered for me as im in no hurry. I have till the 29th to hunt the farm im hunting in Shakopee but im looking to set this gun up for next year. Ill have fun making the purchase and sighting it in over the early spring.

I am a firm beleiver in the hasting barrels aswell. I have 2 rem 1100 20ga guns outfitted with cantilever fully rifled barrels from Hastings. Both are tack drivers out to 125yds with lightfield slugs. You can go right to the Hastings web sight and order the barrel you want. At least you could 2 yrs ago when I bought the one for me wifes 1100..
