Coyote hides?

Hey, I'm going to go coyote hunting for the first time. I've been researching how to care for the hide and what not after one is dispatched but havent found all the answers. Ok since I'm new to this I'd like detailed and step by step answers haha.

The end product i would like to hang on the wall. Are there other things people do with the hides, such as clothes?

When shooting the animal where is best to aim at?

After an animal is down what do i do, skin it? How is that done?

Your best either looking up how to skin a coyote on youtube or buying a video. Its alot easier to understand if you can see it.

I second walleye 12, I remember seeing a few websites that had picture by picture on tube skinning them. After my first cup of coffee, I realized that there is no good way for me to describe how to do this, search the internet, you will get your answer there, with pictures and maybe even a video too

Cut ankle to ankle under the anus. They make a triangle from base of tail to the cut from ankle to ankle. Then either get a tail puller to strip the tail off the bone or cut it off at the base and do it later. I ring the front legs at the knee or some people cut Them off.

Then pull and pull and cut until you pull the hide off to the ears and cut them off. Then pull and cut til you have it off.

Make sure you hang it by both back feet on a good solid item. It will take you a while but will get better at it in time.

I guess if you are getting it tanned you would like the feet on. I suggest bringing it to whoever you plan on getting it done by. Freeze whole if you can't get it there right a way as they will get a green belly in a hurry.

Alright. Is that common to freeze it whole, i'm not sure i'll have freezer room for that.

Does the hide have to be cared for in any way before getting tanned?

Once the temps drop just leaving it outside will freeze it.

Yeah we usually hang and let all ours freeze come winter. The skin needs to be fleshed and dryed before it gets tanned. I would call your taxidermy guy and see what he says that way you get to him right away and he gets the way he wants.

Anyone have a cost estimate for professional tanning?

You could look up Moyle's Tannery. I would guess a coyote hide is approximately $20.00 to $25.00. Just a guess. I just looked it up, $22.00.

Anybody still buying hides? What are prices generally?

Not good. The guy that I usually sell to said he probly won't buy coyotes this year. Even the good western yotes are struggling to sell, I would be happy for $5 for mn yotes in the round. Maybe a buck or two more for put up. I plan on sending everything to NAFA this year.
