Party hunting confusion??

Recommended Posts

We've been trying to figure this out, and can't seem to get an answer from the regs. If my dad tags a deer with his rifle tag, can he still party hunt during the black powder season off of a friend's tag? Also would it matter if he already had the license or not?

We hunt zones 104/107/115 in far northern MN.

Thanks for any info!!

I'm guessing you're in lottery area. I believe he would still be able to party hunt, but he would not be able to tag another deer in the lottery area. Once he or his friend shots a deer, both of them would be done. Not 100% sure on this though.

Only if they both have a muzzleloader license. You need to have a valid license for that season to be in the field party hunting. Read page 73.

Even if he tags a deer with his rifle he can still buy a muzzy license and party hunt during the muzzy season. If it is in a lottery area he just can not tag a deer himself. It must be a open tag of someone in his party that is in the field with him at the same time, not at home.

to party hunt with you he has to have a muzzleloader license. It doesn't matter if he filled his firearms or bow tag. If he tagged a buck under his license he can only an antlerless deer can be tagged on his tag.

To simplify all he needs to party hunt is a valid muzzy license. WHat do you mean by asking if it would matter if he already had it or not?

Okay that is what I thought, but he was convinced he couldn't hunt with his black powder if his tag was filled and his friend still had an open tag.

What I meant above is would they deny selling him a muzzleloader license once his rifle tag was filled, or would he be fine if he filled his rifle tag and still bought a muzzleloader. Basically would he need to buy the license first, because as of now he doesn't have it?

He can buy a muzzy license, they would not deny him. He just can't use it to tag a deer and would need to party hunt to shoot a buck. If you hunt a Managed or Intensive area then he could get a bonus tag and shoot a doe.
