Auger Issue

Recommended Posts

My last time on the ice last year I had an issue with my auger. It was late ice and somehow I managed to get the auger stuck in the ice as I was drilling a hole. After about a minute, the auger became dislodged. As I went to drill another hole, it didn't seem like it wanted to cut without me having to lay across the top and apply most of my body weight. The auger doesn't appear to be bent in anyway. The blades are 2 years old and seem to be very sharp. Maybe a blade was slightly bent? Any suggestions on what may have happened? Thanks in advance. Bring on the ice! smile

What GURU said or...you've knocked your blades off pitch. If you really whammed 'er in tight, and leaned on it to get 'er out, you probably did bend an auger blade. (The tail end of the auger the blades bolt on to) You could also have "slid" a blade back on the auger, too, causing the angle of attack to be out of proper alignment. Oh boy, I don't know where you'd start...but I wish you luck. When I get mine stuck, I just pull the hex bolt out, lift the powerhead off, and "unscrew" the auger.

if it is a strike master it is more likly where the blads bolt on rather than the blads them selfs it is common on the lazer type drill. mine is out of aline right now from reopening holes and my cousins was out of pitch right out of the box but strike master fixed it in about 5 min as stated before. as for the blades I belive they are temperd and will break rather than bend could be wrong however. If your close enough I would just bring it in.

If it's out of pitch, chances are the new blades won't make a difference. It doesn't hurt to have a backup set though. The fix (at least what I saw them do at Strikemaster) is to put it into a jig and check the pitch and adjust (bend) accordingly.

I just seen ur in bemidji u can ship your dill assembly too them but i would do it soon cause ice is right around the corner.I wouldnt recomend using it this way too long cause as I said before the pitch is off on mine and I used it quite awhile like this and ended up takin out my clutch

New blades did not do a thing, actually they were worse due to the fact that the old blades formed a little to the pitch issue. My thought is to get it done right and then get new blades. I drove from Grand Forks one day to have it done when i came to the TC for something. They are open till 1630 mon-fri.

If it is a Lazer or even a Jiffy for that matter..Is the center point tip in good shape? Is the point dulled?

If so, it will not feed the main cutting edge properly. Might wish to replace the tip or check to see if it is blunted. They come in 2 packs, and are good to have on hand, no matter what.

A non replacable Jiffy center point, or the StrikeMaster Mag with a welded point can be files back into shape, just be sure to maintain the 17 degree angle.

i can pretty much guarentee the pitch of the shaft is out of whack...especially if its a 10" which you didn't mention the size...its pretty common in the 10" because there is more shaft to bend.

i bought blades, center points, and the whole ball of wax a couple years ago when my 10" strikemaster was out of whack and wouldn't cut...i would have to lean on it and put everything i had into it just to cut a hole.

brought it to d-rock and with a couple little bends she was cutting like a brand new auger...he actually hooked me up and fixed my auger, gave me sharp blades, and center points for like 15 bucks.

he said it was pretty common with 10" models but still happens with 8" just not as much...he said he never had to do one smaller then 8" at the time.

i sold my old lazer mag express to a buddy at the end of that year and he still uses it today...works good as new.

Blades out of pitch can not only cause your auger not to cut (requiring excessive pressure to cut). It can also cause the reverse problem - blades cutting too agressively. My auger kept trying to screw itself into the ice, would bogg down, and would not clean cut at the bottom of the hole - I actually had to hold it back by lifting up while cutting the hole to get it to cut properly. Had that problem on a display Lazer Express. Also brought it to D-Rock, fixed it under warrenty - great service!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
