wearing orange this weekend?

Recommended Posts

the way i understand it; is that if you are not deer hunting you dont need to wear orange. Just like someone going for a walk on a rural road; but like you said it would be a good idea to have a hat. Or bring a jacket and wave it around if you see someone deer hunting to let them know you are there. Guys out here field hunting in ND bring jackets along to wave in the air when the window shooters are out and about

Page 28 of the regulations:

BLAZE ORANGE REQUIREMENTS

You may not hunt or trap during any open season where deer may be taken by firearms (including special hunts, early anterless, youth seasons and muzzleloader)........

...

This restriction does not apply to migratory waterfowl hunters on waters or in a stationary location or to trappers on waters.

For my benefit if I was close to land I would be wearing. IMO.

I bring a blaze hat and vest incase i have to walk on land to chase a bird, if nature calls, whatever. Better to have it just incase. Depending where you are, you may even want to wear it when underway. But not required. Good luck

I was hunting out by La Qui Parle 2 years ago during the 2nd week of Deer season when a CO Officer stopped our party to check our bag limit. According to the CO officer you had to wear orange (1/2 of your upper body) to and from the duck blind during Deer season. I was surprised about having to wear orange on the water especially in the morning when it's dark our yet but he said traveling to and from your blind you must have orange on.....even in the dark. He said once we got to the blind you could take it off of course. We happened to have orange with us becuase we were doing a duck/pheasant hunt that day so all turned out OK.

Tuesday morning right at legal shooting time we had a guy park his truck on the gravel road next to the beet field we were set up in get out a folding chair and sit right next to his truck holding his rifle. To the west of his truck was a section of all waste water ponds and to the east was the harvested beet field we were in. No woods around, just a slough owned and fenced in by the beet plant, and totally OFF LIMITS to all hunting. Our only guess was that deer come out of the swamp to feed in the beet field, but do deer even eat beets?!?! We definitely got a little nervous and we all started throwing our orange vests and coats up in the air. He noticed and just gave us a little wave like he knew we were there the whole time, then continued to sit there for the next hour and watched us shoot geese haha never got to talk to him but we were all a little confused as to what his plan was.

I believe wearing blaze orange to and from the blind, or chasing down birds, is required.

We wear our blaze anytime we step out of the decoy spread, on land or water and while picking up. obviously setting up in the dark we do not. During muzzleloader also!
