Clam Nanook Mod

I will post pictures when I get some but it is pretty self expanitory. So I got my Nanook Thermal set-up and the one thing I did not like was the rigid position of the seats. I mean they swival, fold down etc but they are bolted to the side of the tub and are placed a bit close together for my liking. This arrangement also hindered access to the tub. Simple fix - instead of bolting I used a couple of those "wire over pins" and pinned them in (instead of bolts). Now all I need to do is pull a couple of pins and I can slide the seat over, I can remove 1 and make it a big one man, I can pull it out and slide things underneath for storage etc. Reality is you only need 1 pin per seat so you really only need to pull 1 pin and your done. I should say that I do believe that the bolt arrangement would/should allow you fold the seat forward (to get easy access to the tub) but if you put runners on the bottem (as I did) the bolts interfered with this. In the end I liked the flexibility the pins give better anyways. Will post pics. Any questions, let me know. Paul

I added the plain Nanook to my Arsenal for this year. I also agree that the seats were just too small. They would be just too uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time. I took the factory seats out and installed a couple of boat seats. I did the same a couple of years back on my Eskimo 1 man. Can remain seated for much longer and great for the roids...LOL Took the bolts that keep the seat frame in place as with larger seats, I needed a bit more space between the seats. Will be drilling new holes to reposition the seats.

Would like to mention that I also installed a U-bolt at the back of the sled. On my 2 other tents, I installed the Hardware. Now I can hook them up to be towed behind the Quad. Imagine a B-train on Hardwater with Flip-overs..... grin

Here's a pic with boat seats

I really liked the new clams except for the rigid seat mounts also so I bought a Otter instead but that seat support bar kind of gets in the way also. A guy could probably mount some type of U channel on the inside of the clam tub so the seat bracket would have something to slide back and forth in.Wish I would have thought about that before getting the Otter. I know I will love it but could have saved some $$ towards other toys.

Just skip installing the front hing assembly. That way you can move the seats left and right and remove the second seat when needed.

You also can flip the seat and keep your feet in the sled this way, adding even more front fish able area.

Once you look at the hinge closer, you will see how easily this is to do and what you will gain.

I'm a bit leery of the hing point on the new lighter sled in the deep cold anyway, it may stress and crack. If I owned one, I would just omit installing the front hinge completely, and gain the flexibility of use.

I received the Nanook Clam, fully assembled, and have all ready unbolted the hinge assembly, which leaves the seat structure secure free. The pros and cons are simple, as usual!

Cons: seats are small, seats don't move, took bolts out seats not secure

pros: thermal!, can move(remove seats) not secured, can slide side to side or take out, our use outside of clam

I think I'll be happy. In my opinion if you have the Nanook, leave the seat structure free, have a unit cover, and you will be fine!
