Nils Auger Blade cover

DrJ

Question

Has anyone figured out a better cover? After one season the plastic is all tore up inside. I have it mounted on my sled so it gets bounced around.I put the auger in a otter tube with the cover on. Do you think it would be okay to use no cover and just let it rest in the plastic tube? I had to get the blade sharpened after the 1st year of use. No sand etc. Is this normal? Any feedback Thanks DrJ.

I would say a winter of use and then sharpen the blades is normal. I usually go through 2 a winter but Im out daily and some times cutting many many holes in some pretty deep ice.

FM's Surface Tension does a good job sharpening Nils Blades and you can find him all over the boards but his home base is on the Bwca/Duluth Forum.

I have used the Black Jiffy cover and that seems to work ok.

As far as the Nils in a Otter tube without a cover I have seen it done. Try it and see and if it doesnt work good go back to a cover. Myself I would use the cover on long trips for sure.

Smallieobsession, Thanks for the reply. The tube is made out of the same plastic as the cover so it makes sense that it would offer the same protection. Good Fishing DrJ
