I myself usually just stick with the blends at the pump and have always had pretty good luck. I never and mean never run just straight #1. I'll stay with #2 to about a 10 degree F myself. Then worry about trying to get blended after that. I think the key is to just kep it plugged it it just makes it so much easier on all the parts. Even if your electric bill jumps a little it is probably still cheaper that having to replace some of the parts on a diesel. I have been in some crazy cold weather and not had any issues but I have also been laying under my truck in early Jan putting a new filter and some anit gel. I do like the idea of the after market addon fuel filter is a great idea. I am thinking there will be one of those finding the way under the hood of my D-Max.

I'm still wondering where so many of you get the idea that plugging in your engine heater is helping prevent fuel system gelling. Please explain.

I certainly is a good idea in terms of the wear and tear on the starting system and it makes it easier for the fuel to ignite once it gets into the warmer combustion chamber, but fuel gelling prevents it from getting into the chamber in the first place. You could have that engine at running temp but if the fuel is cold enough to gel, it won't start or run because the fuel won't get to the injectors.

Bob: My thoughts are that the return fuel is hotter faster which heats the fuel in the tank faster. I would think that would help. Not a proven theory by no means, but rarely hear of a gelled truck that was plugged in.
