minnesotahusker
Is there any study data that can backup the size of a scrape to the size of a deer? Just curious?
96trigger
Size of the scrape doesn't mean as much as the width and depth of the goughes left by the antlers and the size of the hoof prints usually found in them.
HNTNBUX
I think a bigger scrape is just being used by more than one buck or just used more often. The more scraping that is done by each buck it just gets bigger. I usually see the bigger ones in main travel areas where it is likely that more than one buck is using it. Last year the week prior to the rifle season a large scraped showed up almost directly under my stand so I put a camera on it. Fifteen different bucks used that scrape in a week before I pulled my camera.
buckx37x
i think 96t and hntnbux are both right on. although i do think smaller bucks tend to make smaller scrapes, we find very few though in are area as we are quit thick with does. minnesotahusker
From what I can see for hoof prints in the scrape and the scratch marks seem to be a fairly big deer. The space between the toes are around 3". I'd like to see the deer that made that scrape, but some "fool" stole my camera a month or so ago. 96trigger
Too bad, probably the same guy that stole mine. I have another but am too afraid to put it out. If the hoof splits wide and the dew claws dig in deep, you got a nice one there. A little harder to tell now, the wetness could make even a smaller buck leave large tracks. They sink in so deep right now.
Kyle
the length and width of the actual toe prints seem to increase the accuracy of judging a bucks size. I also found a few very large scrapes today. One of them was about 10yds from a nicely raked tree. The print in the scrape was not spread or deep, but was just massive. There is not a doe on earth that could make a print that large! I set a stand about 20yds away, as the scrape was right on a main trail. Also set the camera on the scrape, so I guess we'll see what happens in the next couple days.
Code-Man
I hope big scrapes=big deer. I put out some Tinks 69 infront of my trail camera yesterday when I went in to the stand (100 yds) away. Came back out on the same path and nothing looked different and I decided I would hang also a Hunter Specialities Golden Estrous Tree Leaf on the tree infront of the camera. Came back today and there is a scrape 2 feet wide by 3 feet long. I forgot to grab my extra SD card to switch out since I did switch them out the day prior but I hope I got some decent pictures! HeviShot
Check the branches over your scrape, if there all tore up usually a good sign of a larger deer. Scrape size is usually up to the number of bucks using it.
vister
husker, maybe the guy that stole your camera is setting a trap for ya. maybe he think by doing a mock scrape by your stand, you'll hang another camera over it to see what made the scrape, and take that one too! but i agree on big scrapes being tended to by multiple deer. bucks don't stand there too long and make the scrape, so they're usually about 20" across for a big one. if done by a lone buck once
