Used Gun Values

NTW

Recommended Posts

I am wondering how to sell a couple of used guns. I don't have much idea what they are worth and am not sure if I should trust trade in values.

The first is a 20 ga. Browning BPS about 10yrs old. Not in the best shape but works very well.

The second is a 12 ga. Semi-auto model 50 I believe.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

When I am curious what a gun is worth I go to gunbroker and usually get a ballpark idea of what they are worth. I have brought a couple in to try and trade but when they tell me what they'll give me for them I end up keeping them. You will never get close to what a gun is worth by trading.

Search gunbroker or auction arms for your gun. See what the dealer price is, if it is in great shape, expect at best to get about %80 of the resale value. Probably %10-%20 less if the gun is in rougher shape. I have found this to be a pretty good estimate on private party sales and trade in values. I think anytime you get close to that %80 you are doing good. If you are selliing privately, you can try and get what they are asking online. Remember, it only takes one person that really wants the gun to pony up the cash. The online shops are good ballpark estimates, but I have yet to see very many guns go cheap on those sights.

Thanks for all the advice. To start, I think that I'll take your advice and bring them in to a local gunbroker and see what value he places on them.

I am pretty sure I won't be in a position where I want them back. I still enjoy bowhunting but I have lost interest in waterfowl and am going to hang on to my 870 and a rifle.

Is it legal for me to sell to a private party?

Yes you can cell long guns (shotguns) privately no problem, if you are concerned about who you sell it to, you can take it to a FFL and pay the money to have it sold through them. There is no title or transfer for this, but a copy of the paperwork will be a good bill of sale and documentation. you might have to kick in $20-$25 for this service. If you know the buyer, you can just sell it, I have done that to a number of different guns and never had a problem.

A gun broker will probably give you a less than desirable amount. You could also post them on here in the waterfowl section, I would bet if priced low enough, they would go fast.

What I like to do, and have sold and purchesed guns in the past this way, is get the trade in value for a gun, and sell it privately for that price. I just purchased a nice winchester 1300 for trade in value because my brother wanted to trade it in on a different gun, I told him I would give him the dealer trade in price, and then he was able to negotiate a lower price on the gun he wanted. We both went away happy. Sometimes dealers don't necessarily want those guns.

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
