Radio/CD Replacement in 2004 Silverado

Recommended Posts

The original unit ate a CD and won't spit it out. The dealership charges $350 minimum since they take it out and send it someplace for repair. Is there any reason not to have an after market one installed? I would think I could have that done for less than $350. Can anyone think of a reason not to do this?

for $1,700 you can get one with GPS, hand free phone, Satellite radio, DVD, USB, Bluetooth, and backup camera that will be just about the same size as the stock one. Otherwise to stay under the $300 dollar mark you'll be using an install kit.

First things first, do you have the factory Bose system?

If you don't, then you can buy any aftermarket head unit you wish, buy a mounting kit to fit the larger factory opening in the dash, and also a wiring harness that will adapt the factory wiring to your aftermarket radio.

If you do have the Bose system everything I mentioned above is still in play, however you will need the special wiring adapter to integrate an aftermarket radio into the vehicle's communication system as well as the Bose amplifier. These can run near $100 alone or more depending on the manufacturer and various options available (XM radio, iPod integration, etc.). If you have the steering wheel controls you'll have to make sure the adapter will handle that as well if you wish to still retain those features.

have you looked for a used one? that online place or your local JY?

a couple of years back I picked up an OEM CD player for my old Neon for $40. all I needed / wanted was the ability to play a CD since it had a cassette player. $40, no cutting or splicing and I was in and out in about 3 minutes.

The Bose systems are a little particular, so putting in a used head unit can be tricky too since everything runs on a communications bus. The Body Control Module has different parameters that may or may not need to be changed depending on which head unit is connected.

If you find a good technician who knows how to run a Tech II programmer it shouldn't be an issue, but many times they have no clue. Been there, done that.
