Rattle reel hight

I am sure the answer to this is whatever you prefer but I would like some input on what hight and why people mount there rattle reels. I just purchased wheel house and aam sitting here (with a cocktail) thinking "is there a correct hight to mount these things?"

Any place out of the way. In my wheel house that means that they are almost all at different heights. Some are on the ceiling and some are only 2 feet off the floor. Take your cocktail out to your fish house and think of any possible way that people could run into them or get hooks caught in their clothes before you pick a location. I have one by my card table that is on a slide so It can be easily removed when we play cards.

Out of the way is the way to go. Also try to make sure the line will hang in the middle of the hole, so it doesn't freeze in, on the edge of the hole in the middle of the night. I have a couple positioned next to the top bunk so the guy on the top bunk can get in on the action.

The higher the better, IMHO. Most of mine are on the ceiling, and always out of the way.

This why I asked as I was thinking that there was a certain right hight or something.

another question. If you are putting a reel next to a bunk should it be at the head or tail?

I would think it'd be easier to grab if near the head of the bunk. I've made the leap of faith at a rattle wheel in the middle of the night from the top bunk towards the foot end of the bed and it didn't end well.

I have mounted them near the ceiling but on an "arm" of sorts that is screwed to a hinge which is screwed to the wall, that way they can be swung out of the way when they are not in use and the "arm" is just the right length to put it right over the hole when swung away from the wall.

Mine are on a hinged arm as well. It keeps against the wall and the out of the way when you don't need. Nothing worse than having less than stellar balance (due to a few hot toddys) and getting a hook in your eye.

the ones I have are on and arm. By the head seems like it would be very loud but jimbuck's point of sitting up at night makes total sense. the head it is.

I have the Lewandoski rattle reels mounted 4' off the floor, they work great at that height. You can also pivot them out of the way against the wall or remove them from the wall bracket when not in use.

I always put mine up high. When sitting in a chair near one I just grab the line to jig it and to set the hook. When I stand up I want the reel out of the way and above me. Can't wait.....

I have the rattle snake reels that move back and forth and are about 4 ft off the ground as all. Can take off or move out of the way when needed. Caught a lot of our walleyes up at LOW last year.
