I found this in the metro area today and am trying to figure out what it is. I think it is red jasper, but searched google and I couldn't find an example with nice bands like this one.

As you can probably guess, my rock knowledge doesn't extend much beyond 8th grade earth science. I just like to pick up neat looking rocks for mom.

Thanks in advance!

I've picked up some similar rocks for the rock garden but I have no idea what they are. There are some pretty cool looking "agate wannabees" out there. I'll have to get pics of some of the "other" rocks that find they're way into my pockets

Sure looks like it has some iron in it. Is it magnetic?

When checking for Magnetite, use a piece of Non Magnetized metal that is able to be attracted by the Magnetic Properties of the rock...though if very stongly charged and Opposite Polarity of a known Magnet is applied, you may find a slight repelling...

Use a Magnet to detect iron...

As my geologist bro-in-law would always say when I picked up a rock and ask him what it was - "it's a leavitrite - a leave it right there".

Which was basically his way of saying "not really sure but I know it isn't worth anything".

(not that your rock isn't cool - I just thought that response was funny)
