riversmallmouth35
I am looking at buying a rifle and have found one that I am interested in. It is a Remington 740 woodsman, it is a auto loader. Does anyone have one or heard anything about this model. This will be my first rifle and don't know what to get. Thanks for any help.
hanson
I've got one!! Woodsman or Woodsmaster? I think a 740 is a Woodsmaster, at least mine is.Its an older version of Remington's autoloader manufactured from 1955-1959 (just looked it up and didn't realize it was this old). My great-grandpa bought the one I now have and I use it every fall for rifle season. The 740 Woodsmaster was made in 4 calibers:.244 Remington, .308 Win, .280 Remington, .30-06 I have the .280 Remington.Tell you what... its a pretty good gun. I've never, ever had any issues with it.
Jameson
look into it...Either the 740 or 742 Remington offered to buy back from consumers, because of issues.
alex1
I used to work at Mills Fleet Farm awhile back in the sporting goods dept. We did have people bring them back with issues that they would jam, especially when it got cold out. Maybe they've fixed that problem now, its been 12 yrs. since I worked there. lovebigbluegills
I've got my dad's 740, and I've never had a problem with it, nor do I ever recall him having any problems with it. This one is 30-06.My buddy used to have a 742 in 30-06, and if I'm not mistaken he did have a few problems with his.

B K'S DAD
I have a remington 740 30-06 never had any trouble with it. But 1 of the reason they dont make it any more is because of a jamming issues.
B K'S DAD
They replace it with the 7400 and 7600
icehousebob
One of the problems with the 740 was the angle of the locking lugs. The angle was too steep and if you gently let the bolt close, it sometimes would not lock into the firing position. You had to let the bolt slam shut so it would lock up. The 742 changed the angle. As for the jamming, I knew a couple of guys who had them and had no problems. I think keeping them cleaned and lubed avoided most of the problems. riversmallmouth35
With all of the problems I am hearing from you guys I think I will pass on the gun then. I was skeptical about it because it is a semi auto but wanted to here some reviews. Thanks for your all the help.
