Jigging Rod

Hey Matt,

Good seeing you posting on the Walleye site. Sounds like you are becoming a Muskie Junkie grin

St. Croix makes a very nice legend Elite ML or in the Tournament series that works well for jigging. The guys at Thorne Bros. make alot of these .

Again, personal choice.

I like G. Loomis, and I do like my legend elite 7 ft ML

but looking for something a bit more specific

i can't be super specific. but the best jigging rod i ever owned, (and i ain't kidding when i say i could feel a fish ''swim'' by my jig/snell/lindy) i bought for $4.50 at the goodwill with an old junk reel on it. any markings it had were wore off so bad all i could see was a golden colored faded mark. it was 6'3''s and seemed pretty fast but not overly so and had plenty of power for it's size. it got dragged in the st.croix when i set it down to put a crappie in my well mad..OMG!!! every rod since has been a disappointment, and that includes some pretty spendy sticks. it may have been a g-loomis because of the dull maroonish color. but i'll never know for sure. man i miss that rod. somebody said some rods just feel right... that fits this one to a ''T''. i had it at least a dozen years or more and i almost never lost a fish with it or missed a nibble. it was the best sure hooker i ever owned. at least that's the way i remember it smile

the good news is i'll recognize that feel the second i touch a rod that has it. one little bounce. that certain snap can't be faked or illusioned.

I do most of my jig fishing on the Mississippi pool 3 and 4 for walleyes. I use 6 foot or smaller rod to get that quick hook set. I used to use 7 footers until I fished with my PWT friends, about 10 years ago I made the switch. They would school me with those smaller rods. Now if your jig fishing for bass that's a different story, that's were I use my 7 footers. I use all the top rods,my favorite is a Fenwick TECHNAav 5"9'MLF for river Walleyes.

Is there any place to see or test out the limit creek rods? I'm interested in the Smoothie, but hate ordering online blind.

The local bait and tackle shop on the Mississippi River in Red Wing has a try it before you can buy it program and they carry Limit Creek rods. Go down and talk to Dean and he will get you set up.

Rodmaker, I just booked a trip to LOTW for Sept., So that should prove beneficial for Walleyes and Muskies. I like walleye fishing best, but hooking into that monster musky has switched my focus a bit. You however would like the new reel that I just got for my jigging rod. I picked up a Pflueger Medalist for $45. I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. Sounds like Sportsman's Warehouse will have some hot deals in the next couple weeks as the inventory is picked through.

I like shorter rods for jigging, but Rodmaker has talked me into longer rods for anything else. I really have shifted most of my 6'6" rods to 7' plus. I have about every rod, but a limit creek. To be completely honest I have become a true believer in Shimano rods. I have 3 now and love them all. You have to like their warrenty (over the counter replacement). I also heard that shimano bought G. Loomis (old news) and that has help with the improvement in the shimano rods. Who knows? Most rods are made in the same factory in China.

My personal jigging rod is actually a bit longer than the ones you guys use. It's a 6'9 xfast action St. Croix Avid, medium-light. I THOUGHT I bought the 6'3, but made a mistake, lol. I have a Stradic on that as well. LOVE the combo!

For the money, that Limit Creek Smoothie is hard to beat!

Head down to Dean's and test drive the Smoothie against a St Croix Avid (sim length, power & action). Shut your eyes and jig with both rods, you won't be able to tell the difference. Then look at the price tag and ask yourself if the more expensive stick is worth it.

For the money, Cabela's Fishe Eagle II rods are excellent. They are light and sensitive all for under $90.

St. Croix, no matter which line you buy are good rods. I have a couple of Avids, a few Premier Series and one Triumph. I like them all. If you ever pass through Park Falls stop buy the factory. They have some impressive deals on factory seconds and reconditioned rods.

I also have a few Fennwicks that I really like. HMX's are pretty good rods for the money. I would put the Technica AV's in the same class as GL Loomis GLX and St. Croix Legend Tournament.

Is it May 9th yet grin

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
