2 wheel drive truck on the ice

I used 2-wheel drive for many years and never had problems. Even drove around and pulled out the 4x4s that couldn't make it. An inexpensive set of tire chains can do wonders and I'll gaurrantee that you'll go where a 4x4 can't when it comes to driving on ice.

Just one small consideration. Most 4x4s are designed with a bit more ground clearance under the rocker panels so you might want to keep that in mind.

too bad you dont still have that Tracker,I would buy it!!!! I am looking for a project to play around with?

I put an ad online, someone bought it, had the nerve to talk me down $100, then the next week he posted it for sale, on same forum for $1100 more than he gave me for it. What a great guy

If you're going to use a 2WD vehicle for on ice travel, do yourself a favor and get good snow tires for it. Put some weight in the back and you should be fine if you're semi carefull. If you want some a little extra security, get some tire chains, a pail of ashes, a tow strap and a steel snow snovel. If you're getting stuck often with those, it's time to drop the sled and use that.

As a side note, the two biggest culprits of getting a guy stuck are not found readily on the ice. Hidden objects to hang your truck on or a nonexistant bottom and gravity. If you're having a tough go of it on level ground or a slight decline, you're hosed as soon as you've got to go uphill. You better keep that momentum going as far as you can, and it might take a few tries.

Thanks for the tips guys!..I did pick up a shovel and I was going to get a couple more sandbags...First I thought I'd fill the gas tank for a bit more wieght...I had a quarter tank, but figured I'd fill up on the Mn. side where the gas was cheaper...46 bucks worth! Seems I have a 30 gallon tank at least!..Figured that was plenty extra wieght and was right...Drove over the few inches of snow like a champ!!Even drove out over virgin snow to give a guy a jump after he ran his battery down...Thanks again!
